Jewelry Trends 2026: What's In, What's Out, and What's Worth Buying

Vanhess Team·April 30, 2026
Trending gold jewelry pieces on marble: chunky bracelet, emerald ring, hoops, layered necklaces

Trends in jewellery move slower than trends in fashion, which is good because nobody wants to spend $2,000 on a ring that looks dated in six months. But they do move, and 2026 has some clear directions. After a decade of "less is more" minimalism, the pendulum has swung. People want more presence, more colour, more personality in what they wear. Here's what we're seeing at Vanhess and what's worth buying vs. what's worth skipping.

Bold Gold Is Back (and It's Staying)

Chunky gold chains, wide cuff bracelets, oversized hoops, thick signet rings. Bold gold is the defining look of 2026, and unlike some trends, this one has staying power because it's rooted in classic goldsmithing rather than a momentary aesthetic. Yellow gold specifically. The white gold and silver-tone dominance of the 2010s is over.

Our take: invest here. A solid 14K gold curb chain or a pair of substantial gold hoops will look good in 2026, 2030, and 2040. This isn't a trend, it's a return to how jewellery looked for most of human history. Browse our ring collection and bracelets to see what we carry.

Coloured Gemstones Over Diamonds

Emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and tourmalines are showing up in places traditionally reserved for diamonds: engagement rings, stud earrings, statement rings. Coloured gemstones bring individuality that a white diamond can't match, and younger buyers especially want something that feels like theirs, not like everyone else's.

Our take: this is worth buying if you choose stones that are durable enough for how you'll wear them. Sapphire (9 on Mohs) and ruby (9 on Mohs) can handle daily ring wear. Emerald (7.5-8 but brittle) needs a protective setting. Tourmaline (7-7.5) works in rings with care. Opal and pearl should stay in earrings and pendants. Don't follow this trend blindly with a soft stone in a daily-wear ring. Check our engagement rings for coloured stone options.

Mixed Metals Are Now Intentional

For years, "don't mix metals" was a rule. In 2026, mixing gold, silver, and rose gold within the same outfit (and sometimes within the same piece) is not only acceptable, it's the look. Two-tone rings, a gold chain layered with a silver pendant, rose gold stacked with yellow gold bands.

Our take: buy it if it's done well, but be aware that mixing metals makes matching harder when you want to add pieces later. If you're building a collection you'll stack and layer, commit to one primary metal and use a second as an accent. We think yellow gold + rose gold is the most flattering combination for most skin tones.

East-West Set Stones

Instead of setting an oval, marquise, or emerald-cut stone vertically (pointing up toward the knuckle), the 2026 trend sets them horizontally across the finger. It looks modern, sits lower on the hand, and makes the stone appear wider. This works well for elongated cuts.

Our take: genuinely fresh. An east-west oval sapphire or emerald-cut diamond has a look that's distinctive without being costume-y. Worth considering for a right-hand ring or a non-traditional engagement ring. We can set any elongated stone east-west as a custom order.

Pearl Revival

Pearls are back, but not your grandmother's pearl strand (though those are fine too). The 2026 pearl trend is about modern settings: single baroque pearl pendants, pearl and gold chain combinations, pearl studs as an everyday option. Freshwater pearls keep this accessible since they're a fraction of the cost of Akoya or South Sea.

Our take: freshwater pearls are a great buy right now. Beautiful lustre, organic shapes, and prices that start well under $200 for earrings. Just remember that pearls are soft (2.5-4.5 on Mohs) and porous. No perfume, no chlorine, no ultrasonic cleaners. See our freshwater pearl collection.

What's Fading

Ultra-thin bands. The wire-thin 1.2mm ring shank had a long run, and it's ending. These bands look delicate but they bend, warp, and wear through faster than anything else. We've repaired hundreds of them. The market is moving toward 1.8mm minimum shanks, which is better for the ring and better for your wallet long-term.

Oversized hoops. Hoops aren't going anywhere, but the door-knocker size is being replaced by medium hoops (25mm to 35mm diameter). More wearable, less likely to catch on everything.

Minimalist everything. The single-diamond-on-a-chain look dominated for a decade. It's not gone, but it's no longer the default. People want more visual interest, more texture, more colour.

Key Takeaways

  • Bold gold, coloured gemstones, and mixed metals are the three defining directions of 2026.
  • Invest in trends that are built on lasting materials. A chunky gold chain is both trendy and permanent. A fashion-forward setting on a fragile stone is neither.
  • Ultra-thin bands and oversized hoops are fading. Medium proportions and sturdier construction are replacing both.
  • When in doubt, buy what you'll wear daily. A trend you admire on Instagram but never put on is $0 worth of jewellery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jewellery styles are trending in 2026?

At Vanhess Jewellery in Coquitlam, the biggest requests right now are bold yellow gold pieces (chunky chains, cuffs, signet rings), coloured gemstone rings (emerald and sapphire especially), mixed-metal stacking, and east-west set stones. The minimalist era is giving way to pieces with more presence and personality.

Are diamonds going out of style?

No. Diamonds are still the most popular choice for engagement rings and studs. What's changing is that diamonds are no longer the only option people consider. Coloured gemstones are taking market share in categories like engagement rings and right-hand rings, but diamond remains the default for classic pieces.

Is it OK to mix gold and silver jewellery?

In 2026, mixing metals is the trend, not a faux pas. The key is making it look intentional rather than accidental. Layer a gold chain with a silver pendant. Stack a rose gold band with a yellow gold ring. Commit to the mix rather than looking like you grabbed the wrong piece by mistake.
