Burnaby is one of our most natural service areas. 15–20 minutes west on Highway 1 or Lougheed Highway, and we share the Millennium Line all the way from Coquitlam Central through Lougheed Town Centre, Brentwood, Production Way, and beyond. We’ve made custom engagement rings for clients walking in from Metrotown and Brentwood condos, redesigned heirloom necklaces brought down from Burnaby Mountain (SFU faculty are surprisingly frequent visitors), and crafted matching wedding bands for couples whose ceremony was at Hart House at Deer Lake.
Burnaby is BC’s third-largest city with a 2021 census population of 249,125 and one of the most diverse jewellery markets in Metro Vancouver. Metrotown alone hosts several mall-chain jewellery retailers (People’s, Pandora, Michael Hill), plus Asian-market gold retailers clustered around Crystal Mall. What those retailers offer is cased inventory and preset semi-custom. What we offer is different: bench-level bespoke design, drawn and made for you in Coquitlam, with past commissions on display and the goldsmith working on your piece in the next room.
As a Canadian Jewellers Association member — CJA membership requires adherence to a mandatory Code of Ethics — and with 150+ five-star Google reviews, we serve Burnaby clients the way most Metrotown chains don’t: ground-up custom design, transparent pricing, and lifetime care for every piece we make.
Featured Burnaby work
“Add a real Burnaby client testimonial here once collected. Quote should mention “Burnaby” explicitly — e.g.: ‘We’re a Burnaby couple and Vanhess made our engagement ring exactly the way we sketched it. Worth the 20-minute drive to Coquitlam.’”

What we make for Burnaby clients
Why Burnaby clients choose Vanhess
With Mandarin (14.5%) and Cantonese (12.3%) together making up over a quarter of Burnaby’s mother-tongue distribution per Statistics Canada, we work in Chinese and English at the bench every week. Ethnic Chinese residents make up 33.3% of Burnaby’s population, the largest single ethnic group. That shapes the commissions we receive from Burnaby families: tea-ceremony jewellery, dragon-and-phoenix bangle sets, 24K pure-gold pendants for traditional wedding customs, and Western-style engagement rings designed to pair with those traditional pieces for blended ceremonies.
Hart House at Deer Lake — the 1910 Tudor-style heritage venue overlooking the lake — has been one of the region’s premier wedding venues for decades, and we’ve made bands for many couples celebrating there. For proposal photography, the Deer Lake boardwalk, the Burnaby Village Museum grounds, and the SFU mountaintop view are local favourites; we’ve designed engagement rings specifically for each backdrop.
Practically, the transit story matters. The Millennium Line runs from Lougheed Town Centre and Brentwood directly to Coquitlam Central in about 12 minutes — a simple one-seat ride, no transfers required. For drivers, Highway 1 east or Lougheed Highway east from almost anywhere in Burnaby gets you to Coquitlam Centre in under 20 minutes outside of peak traffic.
Custom engagement rings & wedding bands for Burnaby couples
Burnaby couples come to us for the full spectrum of bespoke engagement rings: solitaires, halos, three-stones, hidden halos, bezel settings, tension settings, and unusual cuts (oval, pear, marquise, emerald, asscher, and radiant). We handle both lab-grown and natural diamonds, coloured gemstones, and 24K traditional pieces for clients blending Western and Chinese wedding customs.
Fine jewellery is one of the few luxury categories to have held steady through recent market cycles. Bain & Company’s 2024 luxury study (reported by National Jeweler) found that jewellery was the most resilient core luxury category at flat-to-+2% growth, with high jewellery and personalised / bespoke offerings outperforming the broader luxury market. For Burnaby clients evaluating a semi-custom mall ring vs a true custom piece, that broader trend matters: demand for personalised fine jewellery is rising, and the supply chain is shifting to match.
On price, our custom engagement rings start around CAD $1,500 (simple lab-grown solitaires) and most fall between $2,500 and $4,500. Wedding bands are typically $600–$1,800 in 14K or 18K gold, more in platinum. We price stone, metal, and labour itemised — you see every line before committing. For comparison, The Knot 2024 Jewelry and Engagement Study puts the US average engagement ring spend at around $5,200 USD; Canadian budgets typically run similar after currency conversion.
For couples planning ahead, the average engagement length in Canada is about 14 months per The Knot Worldwide 2024 Global Wedding Report. We recommend starting custom engagement ring design at least 3 months before the proposal date, and wedding band design 2 months before the ceremony.
Heirloom redesign and 24K gold work for Burnaby families
Heirloom redesign is one of our most-requested services from Burnaby clients, especially families with multi-generational Chinese wedding jewellery. We work in 24K, 22K, 18K, and 14K and can reset stones, melt down inherited gold, or rebuild a traditional piece into something the next generation will actually wear. Common Burnaby redesigns: reshaping a 24K dragon-and-phoenix bangle into a modern pendant, resetting a jade cabochon into a daily-wear ring, or melting a collection of inherited rings into a pair of matched wedding bands.
The sustainability case is real. The World Gold Council’s 2024 Gold Demand Trends full-year report shows recycled gold hit 1,370 tonnes in 2024 — roughly 27.5% of total global supply, the highest share since 2012. When we melt down inherited pieces for a redesign, we’re part of the same circular supply chain that the industry is formalising. For natural diamonds we source, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme covers approximately 99.8% of the world’s rough diamond trade.
Pricing, timelines, and what to expect
A typical custom engagement ring takes 4–6 weeks from design sign-off. Wedding band matching is 3–4 weeks. Heirloom redesigns vary — simple resets are 2–3 weeks, full rebuilds around 6. Burnaby couples with a specific proposal or wedding date should start the conversation 3 months ahead for engagement rings, 2 months for bands.
Canadian weddings aren’t cheap. MoneySense, citing WeddingWire Canada, puts the average 2024 Canadian wedding at approximately $29,450. The engagement ring typically sits alongside venue, catering, and photography as one of the largest single-line items — which is why we refuse to run a catalogue-based semi-custom model. Every piece is drawn for you, with sketch and CAD stages, before metal is cast.
Once delivered, Jewelers Mutual recommends a fresh appraisal every two years to keep your insurance coverage aligned with market value. We provide a full replacement-value appraisal at delivery, and a complimentary 6-month inspection for every piece we make.

Common questions from Burnaby clients
How do I get from Burnaby to your Coquitlam studio?
By car, 15–20 minutes via Highway 1 or Lougheed Highway east. By SkyTrain, the Millennium Line connects Lougheed Town Centre directly to Coquitlam Central in about 12 minutes — we’re a 2-minute walk from the station entrance inside Coquitlam Centre. From Metrotown, transfer from Expo to Millennium at Production Way; total trip is about 25–30 minutes.
Are you cheaper than Metrotown chains for custom?
Different model. Chains sell semi-custom from preset designs with fixed margins and off-site trade-shop manufacturing. We design from scratch in Coquitlam, source stones to your spec, and handcraft on-site. Custom engagement rings start around $1,500 with most falling in the $2,500–$4,500 range. For a similar stone, metal, and finish, our pricing is often close to or better than chain semi-custom because we don’t carry the same overhead structure.
Do you speak Mandarin or Cantonese?
Yes — we have Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking team members at the bench and frequently work with Burnaby couples planning Chinese tea ceremonies, 24K gold dowry pieces, and traditional wedding jewellery.
Can you make 24K gold pieces?
Yes. We work in 24K, 22K, 18K, 14K, platinum, and palladium. 24K is softer and better suited to traditional wedding jewellery (bangle sets, pendants) than daily-wear rings; we’ll guide you on which metal suits which piece.
Lab-grown or natural diamond — what do Burnaby clients choose?
About half-and-half in our recent experience. Lab-grown gets you a larger or higher-grade stone at the same budget; natural holds more stable long-term value and pairs well with heirloom redesigns. We walk you through both options with loupe in hand. Independent research backs the trend: Edahn Golan’s diamond analytics shows the average price of a 1ct lab-grown diamond fell from $3,410 in Jan 2020 to $892 in Dec 2024 — roughly a 74% drop — while natural 1ct pricing fell less sharply. Translation: lab-grown is dramatically cheaper, but you need to think about resale expectations.
Can I see real past work in person?
Yes. Our Coquitlam storefront has live inventory and past commissions on display — something most appointment-only studios can’t offer. Walk in during mall hours or book a 60-minute consultation for dedicated bench time.
How often should I inspect my ring after delivery?
For daily-wear rings, professional inspection every 6 months is the industry guideline — it catches loose prongs before a stone is lost. Jewelers Mutual’s inspection guide is a good reference. We offer complimentary inspections for every piece we make.
