Together the 4Cs give you a complete description of a diamond and a fair way to compare one stone against another. They were defined by the Gemological Institute of America and are now used worldwide. The important thing to remember is that they do not all matter equally to the eye, so knowing where to spend is the real skill.

Cut is the most important for how a diamond actually looks. It controls how much light the stone gathers and throws back as sparkle, so a well-cut diamond looks bright and lively even when its colour and clarity grades are modest.
