How to Tell if a Diamond Is Real

There are quick checks you can do at home, but none of them are proof on their own. Here is what each test really shows, which myths to ignore, and the one reliable way to know for sure.

The honest answer first

You cannot be certain a diamond is real from a home test. The checks below can raise or lower your confidence, but the only sure way is a jeweller with proper tools, or a grading report from a respected lab. Start there if the answer really matters.

Home checks that give a hint

  • The fog test: breathe on the stone. A real diamond clears almost at once because it moves heat away quickly. A fake often stays foggy for a moment or two. This is a hint, not proof.
  • The read-through test: place a loose, unmounted stone flat over a line of print. A well-cut diamond bends light so much you usually cannot read the line through it. Some fakes let you read it clearly.
  • The sparkle: a diamond returns bright white flashes with smaller colour flashes. A stone that throws lots of rainbow fire may be a simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
  • Setting clues: real diamonds are usually set in gold or platinum, often marked 14k, 18k, 585, 750, PT or 950. A precious metal mark is a small point in favour of a real stone.
Myths to skip

The scratch-glass test and the heat-and-drop test can damage a stone or hurt you, and they do not prove anything. A modern simulant can scratch glass too. Do not risk the piece.

What jewellers actually use

In the shop we do not rely on home tricks. A thermal and electrical tester checks how the stone moves heat and electricity, which separates diamond from most fakes and flags moissanite. Under magnification we look for natural inclusions and the tiny signs of a real stone. If the diamond has a grading report with a laser-inscribed number, we match that number to the stone. That combination is as close to certain as it gets.

Real, lab-grown, and simulant are three different things

Keep the words straight. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond with the same makeup as a mined one, and by law it must be labelled as lab-grown under the FTC Jewelry Guides. A simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite only looks like a diamond and is a different material. Real versus lab-grown is about origin. Real versus simulant is about whether it is a diamond at all.

Does the fog test really work?

The fog test is a hint, not proof. When you breathe on a real diamond the fog clears almost instantly, because diamond moves heat away from its surface faster than almost any other material, while many imitations hold the fog for a second or two longer. It is a quick, harmless check you can do at home, and a stone that stays foggy is worth a closer look. But it is not reliable on its own: moissanite also disperses heat quickly and can clear fog like a diamond, and results vary with room humidity and how you breathe. Treat a passed fog test as mild reassurance, never as confirmation. If it actually matters, follow up with a jeweller's tester or a grading report, which is the only way to be sure.

Should I scratch glass to test a diamond?

No, please do not. The old idea that only a real diamond scratches glass is a myth that can damage your jewellery and prove nothing. Diamond is extremely hard, but so are several imitations, and cubic zirconia or moissanite can scratch glass too, so a positive result tells you almost nothing. Worse, dragging a set stone across glass can chip the diamond at a weak point, loosen it in the setting, or scratch the metal, and you risk cutting yourself on broken glass. There is simply no upside. If you want to know what a stone is, use a proper thermal and electrical tester or check its grading report and laser inscription, both of which are safe and far more accurate than any scratch test.

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes, a lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical makeup, the same crystal structure and the same hardness as a mined diamond, so it behaves identically on a tester and looks identical to the eye. The only difference is origin: one grew in the earth over a very long time, the other was grown in a controlled setting in weeks. Because they are so alike, the law requires sellers to state clearly when a diamond is lab-grown, using words like laboratory-grown or laboratory-created, so buyers are never misled. A lab-grown diamond is not a fake or a simulant like cubic zirconia. It is a genuine diamond that usually costs less than a mined one of the same grade, which is why many buyers choose it.

Jewellers combine a few tools rather than relying on any single trick.
