How the appraisal works
Mehran tests the metal and purity, weighs and grades the stones, and documents total carat weight, measurements, condition, and photographs. Diamonds are assessed against the GIA 4Cs standard; if your stone already carries a GIA report, we check it against GIA Report Check before referencing it. The finished report states a replacement value and a valuation date, since Jewelers Mutual notes values shift as precious-metal and stone prices move.
Fees and timing
Appraisal fees are charged per item, never as a percentage of value, and confirmed before we begin. A single-item appraisal is usually done during your visit or within a few business days; a larger collection takes longer, since each piece is examined individually rather than batch-estimated. No appointment is required for a single piece, just walk in during mall hours.

How long does an appraisal take?

Usually yes, most insurers require a current written appraisal before adding a specific ring to your policy. That is exactly the replacement-value report we provide.
How often should I update my appraisal?
Jewelers Mutual suggests every two years or so, since gold, platinum, and diamond prices change over time. Confirm with your own insurer, since some set a shorter interval.
Can you appraise jewellery I didn't buy from Vanhess?
Yes. We appraise pieces from any source, including inherited and estate jewellery. Bring any existing GIA reports or receipts and we will factor them into the valuation.
How much does an appraisal cost?
We charge per item, never as a percentage of value, and confirm the exact fee before starting. A value-based fee would reward a higher number, which is why we do not use one.
What if my piece needs cleaning or repair before it's appraised?
Bring it as-is. Mehran can appraise a piece in its current condition, and if a repair would meaningfully raise its value or wearability, we'll flag that separately from the appraisal itself.
Can you appraise an estate or inherited collection?
Yes, we prepare fair-market valuations for settling an estate or dividing jewellery among family, examining each piece in person rather than working from a list or photos.
