Pearl Restringing & Knotting
Hand-knotted pearl and bead restringing on silk or professional cord, with new clasps fitted as needed — done in-house at our Coquitlam bench.
Pearls that have stretched, gone slack, or snapped need restringing — and it’s worth doing properly. Vanhess Jewellery hand-knots pearl and bead strands at our Coquitlam Centre bench, on silk or professional cord, with new clasps fitted as needed. We’re a Canadian Jewellers Association member with 150+ five-star Google reviews, and the work is done in-house, so your pearls never leave the shop in a courier bag.
What restringing involves
- Hand-knotting between pearls — a knot between each pearl stops them rubbing and means a break loses one pearl, not the whole strand.
- Silk or professional cord — matched to the pearl size and the look you want; silk for classic strands, stronger cord for heavier beads.
- New clasps — we can replace a worn or dated clasp, or upgrade to a more secure one.
- Bead & gemstone strands — not just pearls; coral, jade, onyx, and other bead necklaces too.
When to restring
As a rule of thumb, pearls worn often should be restrung every couple of years, or sooner if the cord looks grey and grimy, the knots have loosened, or there are visible gaps between pearls. Silk absorbs skin oils and perfume over time and weakens. If a strand has already broken, gather every pearl you can — we’ll re-sort them in order and match a replacement if any are lost.
Pricing & turnaround
Cost depends on the strand length, pearl count, whether knotting is required, and any new clasp. We give a free estimate when you bring the piece in. Most restringing is finished within a week or so. While your pearls are with us, we can also clean and check the rest of your jewellery — see our repair services.
Pearl restringing questions
Why knot between each pearl?
Knotting stops the pearls grinding against each other and means that if the strand ever breaks, you lose one pearl rather than the whole necklace scattering.
How often should pearls be restrung?
Every couple of years for pearls worn regularly, or sooner if the silk looks dirty and stretched or the knots have gone slack.
Can you restring beads that aren’t pearls?
Yes — coral, jade, onyx, and other bead and gemstone strands too, knotted or strung to suit the piece.
