Custom Jewellery in New Westminster
20–30 min via Brunette Avenue or Highway 1. CJA-member custom jeweller serving the Royal City — Tagalog, English, and Punjabi spoken at the bench.
New Westminster is BC’s oldest city — the original Colony of BC’s capital, incorporated 1860 — and one of our most accessible service areas, 20–30 minutes by car or a Millennium → Expo Line transit ride. We work with New West clients across both old and new: heirloom redesigns from families with deep generations in the Royal City, custom engagement rings for couples in the new Quayside and Brewery District towers, and matching wedding bands for couples married at Westminster Pier Park or the Anvil Centre.
The Tagalog-leading mother-tongue profile (4.5% per Statistics Canada) is rare in Metro Vancouver, and we work regularly with Filipino-Canadian families on multi-generational wedding traditions including the arras (the 13 wedding coins for Filipino Catholic ceremonies). Mandarin (4.4%) and Punjabi (3.5%) follow.
As a Canadian Jewellers Association member — CJA membership requires adherence to a mandatory Code of Ethics — with 150+ five-star Google reviews, we offer New West clients real Coquitlam-storefront access, full mall hours, and a goldsmith bench on-site — the opposite of the appointment-only studio experience that the established New West retailers don’t offer either.

What we make for New Westminster clients
Why New Westminster clients choose Vanhess
The River Market at Westminster Quay (reopened 2010), Queen’s Park, and Westminster Pier Park frame a lot of the engagement-photo work we see from New West couples. Queensborough — Lulu Island, with its large Punjabi Sikh community — is part of our New West client base; we work in 22K and 18K and have helped Queensborough families reset inherited Indian gold into Western-style engagement rings while preserving the original metal value.
For Filipino-Canadian couples specifically, we’ve made arras (the 13 wedding coins for Filipino Catholic ceremonies), traditional gold pendants, and custom wedding bands designed to coordinate with both the arras ceremony and Western-style reception jewellery. New West’s relatively high Tagalog mother-tongue share concentrates a lot of this work in our consultations.
Practically, the geography is short. Brunette Avenue north or Highway 1 east is 20–30 minutes from most of New West, and the SkyTrain transit option (Expo to Production Way, Millennium to Coquitlam Central) is about 25 minutes total — one of the more convenient transit-served service areas we have.
Custom engagement rings & wedding bands for New West couples
New West couples come to us for the full bespoke spectrum, with the city’s mix of heritage families and new-condo couples shaping a varied commission profile. Common requests: classic four- and six-prong solitaires for Quayside-condo couples, heirloom-redesign engagement rings drawn from family pieces (more common among the Royal City heritage families), Filipino-tradition arras sets, and 22K-to-18K Indian-gold heirloom resets from Queensborough clients.
On stone choice, lab-grown vs natural is the primary budget conversation. The Knot 2024 study (via Rapaport) reports 52% of US engagement rings sold in 2024 had a lab-grown centre stone, up from 46% in 2023. Pricing has shifted dramatically: Edahn Golan’s analytics shows the average price of a 1ct lab-grown fell from $3,410 (Jan 2020) to $892 (Dec 2024). For New West couples balancing a wedding budget across multiple traditions and ceremonies, lab-grown often unlocks budget headroom.
For diamond grading, the GIA 4Cs primer is the global standard. GIA Report Check verifies any GIA-graded stone by report number.
Most of our custom engagement rings fall between CAD $2,500 and $4,500, with lab-grown solitaires from $1,500. The Knot 2024 study puts the US average ring spend at about $5,200 USD. MoneySense (citing WeddingWire Canada) puts the average 2024 Canadian wedding at approximately $29,450; Filipino-Canadian and Sikh-Hindu weddings with multiple ceremonies often run higher, making the engagement ring one line in a larger overall budget.
Heirloom redesign and 22K Indian gold reset
Heirloom redesign is a regular request from both the Royal City heritage families and the Queensborough Punjabi-Sikh community. For the heritage families, common redesigns are mid-century or earlier diamond clusters reshaped into modern solitaires; pearl or coloured-stone pieces reset into pendants; family-crest signets restored.
For Queensborough families, the typical request is resetting inherited 22K or 24K Indian gold into Western-style engagement rings or wedding bands. The process: weigh and value at current spot using World Gold Council reference rates, design the new piece, melt the heirloom into the new casting, and preserve any stones worth keeping. The family retains the full gold value and gains a piece the next generation will actually wear daily.
The trend is broader than New West. An AP-wire feature noted that a growing share of couples are choosing to redesign heirloom rings rather than buy new. Material trends back it: the World Gold Council’s 2024 report shows recycled gold supply at 27.5% of total global supply — the highest since 2012. Natural diamonds we source come through the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, which covers approximately 99.8% of the world’s rough diamond trade.
Pricing, timelines, and what to expect
Custom engagement rings: 4–6 weeks. Wedding band matching: 3–4 weeks. Heirloom Indian-gold redesigns: 3–5 weeks. Filipino arras sets: 3–4 weeks. New West couples should start the consultation 3 months before the proposal date and 2 months before the ceremony.
Once your ring is delivered, professional inspection every 6 months for daily-wear rings is the industry guideline per Jewelers Mutual. Jewelers Mutual recommends a fresh appraisal every two years — especially important for pieces with significant gold weight, where metal value can swing with market prices. We provide both as part of every commission.

Common questions from New Westminster clients
How do I get from New West to your Coquitlam studio?
By car, 20–30 minutes via Brunette Ave or Hwy 1. By transit, Expo Line to Production Way then Millennium Line to Coquitlam Central — about 25 minutes total. Free covered parking at Coquitlam Centre.
Do you do Filipino traditional wedding jewellery?
Yes. We’ve made arras (the 13 wedding coins for Filipino Catholic ceremonies), traditional gold pendants, and custom wedding bands for Filipino-Canadian couples in New West and beyond. We can quote arras sets in 14K, 18K, or 22K depending on tradition and budget.
Can you redesign 22K Indian gold into a modern engagement ring?
Yes — one of our most-requested services from Queensborough and Surrey clients. We can reset stones, melt down inherited 22K, and design a Western-style 14K or 18K ring while preserving the original metal value. Typical turnaround 3–5 weeks.
Do you do same-day repairs or appraisals?
Some repairs (re-tipping, basic ring sizing within range, simple polishing) are often same-day. More involved work is 1–2 weeks. Appraisals require a booked appointment so the appraiser can give the piece full attention. Call ahead.
What’s the budget for a starter custom engagement ring?
Most of our custom engagement rings fall between CAD $2,500 and $4,500. Lab-grown solitaires start around $1,500. Lab-grown vs natural is the biggest swing factor; Edahn Golan’s analytics shows the price gap is dramatic. We walk you through both honestly.
How do I verify a GIA-graded diamond?
Enter the report number on GIA Report Check. You’ll see the original grades and can confirm authenticity. GIA is the most-trusted grading lab globally and the originator of the 4Cs (Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat).
Do you do men’s wedding bands?
Yes — extensive selection plus full custom. Common requests: simple 6mm 14K bands, hammered or brushed finishes, low-profile designs for active wearers, and wood-inlay or carbon-fibre bands. We coordinate with the engagement ring (matched contour, matched metal, matched finish) where it makes sense.
