Jewellery Repair in Metro Vancouver
Vanhess Jewellery is a full-service fine jewellery repair workshop inside Coquitlam Centre, serving Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, the Tri-Cities, and the rest of Metro Vancouver. Our on-site goldsmiths are members of the Canadian Jewellers Association and use a touch-screen laser welder alongside traditional bench techniques to repair gold, platinum, silver, and antique pieces — including heat-sensitive settings with opals, emeralds, and pearls.
Free written estimates. Typical turnaround 3–10 business days. Every repair backed by a 6-month workmanship warranty.
Fine jewellery repair, done in-house at our Coquitlam workshop
Most Metro Vancouver jewellers ship repairs out to third-party workshops. We don't. Every resize, solder, stone setting, and polish happens at our bench in Coquitlam Centre, so your piece never leaves the shop overnight and we can quote you in person before any work starts. That's a material difference for sentimental pieces, heirlooms, and anything you'd rather not hand to a courier.
- All repairs performed on-site — not sent to an off-site trade shop.
- Touch-screen laser welder for heat-sensitive stones (opal, emerald, tanzanite, pearl) and antique solder joins.
- Canadian Jewellers Association members — bonded, insured, and held to CJA code-of-ethics standards.
- Free written estimates with firm pricing — no "while we have it open" surprises.
- 6-month workmanship warranty on every repair we perform.

Ring Resizing (Gold, Platinum, Silver)
We resize rings up or down in 10k, 14k, 18k, and 22k gold, platinum, palladium, and sterling silver — including soldered wedding sets, channel-set bands, and most eternity rings. Larger size changes, stones close to the shank, or tension settings get a structural assessment before we quote, because some rings are better rebuilt than stretched.
Typical pricing: $45–$150 · Turnaround: 3–7 business days · Free assessment.
Prong Re-Tipping and Stone Tightening
Worn prongs are the single most common cause of lost diamonds. If your centre stone moves when you tap it, or your prongs look flat from the side, the setting needs attention. We rebuild prongs with matched gold or platinum and re-tighten loose stones before they fall out. We also re-tip shared-prong and pavé settings, which most shops decline.
Typical pricing: $35–$120 per prong · Turnaround: 3–7 business days · Stone inspection always included.
Laser Welding and Chain Soldering
Our touch-screen laser welder delivers a precise pulse of heat to a spot smaller than a millimetre, which means we can repair broken chains, close split rings, and repair antique pieces without disturbing surrounding metal or stones. It's the only safe way to work near opals, emeralds, tanzanite, pearls, turquoise, and most organic materials — and it's what lets us solder a chain join so cleanly it disappears.
Typical pricing: $45–$200 · Turnaround: 2–5 business days · Safe for heat-sensitive stones.
Polishing and Refinishing
Years of daily wear leave fine jewellery dull, scratched, and cloudy. Our refinishing service removes surface scratches, restores high-polish or matte/brushed finishes to their original spec, and is the single highest-impact thing you can do for a 10-year-old engagement ring or wedding band. We polish rings, bangles, pendants, and chain links. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning is included free with any repair.
Typical pricing: $25–$80 · Turnaround: Same-day to 3 business days.
Rhodium Plating for White Gold
White gold is naturally a warm grey — the bright, reflective white finish is rhodium plating, and it wears off. We re-plate rings, pendants, and earrings to restore the finish, and we recommend re-plating every 12–24 months for pieces worn daily. Before re-plating, we polish the piece so the plating lays down on a clean surface and lasts longer.
Typical pricing: $60–$120 · Turnaround: 3–5 business days · Most durable result when combined with polishing.
Pearl and Bead Re-Stringing
Pearl strands should be re-strung roughly every 18–24 months if worn regularly, or any time the silk starts to yellow or stretch. We re-string on fresh silk (knotted between pearls) or on Beadalon wire (for beads, coral, turquoise), inspect and replace the clasp if needed, and clean each pearl with a conservator-safe solution before re-stringing. Bring the original clasp if you'd like it re-used.
Typical pricing: $45–$180 depending on length and knotting · Turnaround: 5–10 business days.
Gemstone Replacement and Resetting
If you've lost a diamond or coloured gemstone, we source a matched replacement from our supplier network — matched by size, cut, colour, and clarity (or species, for coloured stones). For resetting, we lift your existing stones out of a tired mount, assess each for chips or damage, and set them into a new or restored piece. Heirloom resettings often combine multiple loose stones into a single new design.
Typical pricing: $50–$450 (labour); stone cost quoted separately · Turnaround: 2–4 weeks.
Antique and Heirloom Jewellery Restoration
Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and mid-century pieces need a different approach than contemporary jewellery. Original solder joins are often soft (low-temp solders used historically), enamel work is heat-sensitive, and older settings like buttercup, belcher, and gypsy mounts require techniques most modern bench jewellers no longer practise. We use laser welding for most antique repairs specifically because it lets us work without disturbing the rest of the piece.
Typical pricing: $40–$200+ · Turnaround: 2–4 weeks · Free initial assessment.
Ultrasonic Jewellery Cleaning and Inspection
Professional ultrasonic and steam cleaning removes built-up lotion, soap, and skin oils from behind stones and inside settings — places a toothbrush can't reach. Included free with any repair, or available on its own for $25–$45. Every cleaning comes with a free prong-and-setting inspection so we can flag issues before they cost you a stone.
Typical pricing: $25–$45 · Turnaround: While you wait (10–20 minutes) · Free with any repair.

Jewellery repair FAQs
How much does jewellery repair cost in Vancouver?
Most common repairs fall into these ranges: ring resizing $45–$150, prong re-tipping $35–$120 per prong, laser welding and chain soldering $45–$200, rhodium plating $60–$120, polishing $25–$80, and pearl re-stringing $45–$180 depending on length and knotting. Heirloom restoration and gemstone replacement are quoted after an in-person assessment. All estimates at Vanhess Jewellery are free and in writing before any work begins.
How long does a jewellery repair take?
Standard turnaround at our Coquitlam workshop is 3–10 business days. Simple repairs like ring cleaning, polishing, or a basic solder can often be completed same-day or within 48 hours. Complex jobs — stone replacement, heirloom restoration, or full rebuilds — typically take 2–4 weeks because they may require sourcing matched stones or custom casting. We provide a written turnaround estimate with every quote.
Can you repair jewellery with heat-sensitive stones like opal, emerald, or pearl?
Yes. We use a touch-screen laser welder, which delivers a precise pulse of heat to a spot smaller than a millimetre. Because the surrounding metal stays cool, we can repair pieces with opals, emeralds, tanzanite, pearls, turquoise, and organic materials without removing the stones. Traditional torch soldering is not safe for these materials.
Do you repair jewellery you didn't sell?
Yes. We repair jewellery from any origin — pieces bought elsewhere, online, overseas, or inherited. We handle gold (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k), platinum, palladium, sterling silver, and most titanium and tungsten bands. We will not work on costume or plated pieces where the base metal can't support professional repair.
Can you resize a ring with channel-set or eternity stones?
Often yes, within one size. Channel-set, pavé, and full-eternity rings have structural limits: resizing more than a half-size up or down risks disturbing the stones and the setting. For larger size changes we recommend a full rebuild, where we cast a new shank in your exact size and reset the stones. We'll tell you honestly at the free assessment which option your ring needs.
Do you offer a warranty on jewellery repairs?
Every repair at Vanhess Jewellery includes a 6-month workmanship warranty. If a solder joint, re-tipped prong, or replaced stone fails under normal wear within six months, we fix it at no charge. Damage from impact, loss, or chemical exposure is not covered, but we'll always provide a fair repair quote.
Where is Vanhess Jewellery located and do you serve Vancouver?
Our workshop and showroom are inside Coquitlam Centre at Unit 2424, 2929 Barnet Highway, Coquitlam, BC V3B 5R5 — about 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver via the Millennium Line SkyTrain (Lincoln Station). We serve customers from across Metro Vancouver, including Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Burnaby, Vancouver, North Vancouver, Surrey, New Westminster, and Richmond. Call (604) 653-6449 to book.
Do I need an appointment to drop off a jewellery repair?
No appointment is required for repair drop-offs during mall hours. Walk in any time, and one of our goldsmiths will assess your piece, explain options, and provide a written quote — most assessments take 10–15 minutes. For complex custom work or heirloom restorations, we recommend booking a 30-minute consultation by calling (604) 653-6449.
Can you rhodium plate a ring that isn't white gold?
Rhodium plating is designed for white gold. It can also be applied to sterling silver or yellow gold to give a temporary bright-white finish, but on yellow gold the underlying colour will show through as the plating wears — typically within 6–12 months. For a permanent white finish on a yellow gold ring, the piece should be remade in white gold or platinum.
Is it worth repairing old or inexpensive jewellery?
Often yes — especially for sentimental pieces. A broken gold chain that would cost $600 to replace can usually be laser-soldered for under $60. A worn wedding band can be refinished and re-tipped for a fraction of the cost of a new one. For pieces where the repair cost approaches the replacement cost, we'll tell you honestly and suggest options, including a heirloom redesign that reuses your gold and stones.
