Jewelry Repair in Coquitlam: What We Fix, How Long It Takes, What It Costs

Vanhess Team·April 10, 2026
A jeweler's workbench in Coquitlam with repair tools, a brass ring mandrel, a loupe, a torch, and a partially repaired gold ring under warm work light

If you've cracked a prong, snapped a chain, or finally admitted that the engagement ring you've been wearing for ten years no longer fits, this guide is for you. We do jewelry repair on site at our Coquitlam shop, on a real bench, with the same tools and techniques used to make jewelry from scratch. Below is what we actually fix, what it typically costs, and how long it takes. No bait pricing, no "starting at $" tricks.

What we repair

Most of what comes across our bench falls into one of seven buckets. If your problem isn't on this list, bring it in anyway and we'll take a look. We've been doing this for over a decade and very few things surprise us.

  • Ring resizing — up or down, in 14K, 18K, 10K gold, sterling silver, and platinum. Plain bands are straightforward. Eternity rings, channel-set rings, and rings with stones near the shank take longer because the work is more involved.
  • Prong rebuilding and re-tipping — if a stone is wobbling, the prong holding it is worn down. Left alone, the stone falls out. Rebuilding a single prong takes us about 20 minutes.
  • Chain repair — broken links, snapped clasps, weak solder joints. We can also shorten or lengthen most chains.
  • Stone replacement — diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, cubic zirconia. We carry common sizes in stock and can source uncommon ones in 1–2 weeks.
  • Polishing and refinishing — restores the original shine, removes years of micro-scratches. Doesn't fix dents or significant damage.
  • Rhodium replating — for white gold rings that have started to look yellow or grey. Rhodium wears off every 1–3 years depending on how hard you wear the ring.
  • Solder repair — for cracked bands, broken bezels, snapped pendant bails.

Approximate pricing

Every repair is quoted on inspection because the same job can vary by metal type, stone setting, and how much damage is involved. The numbers below are typical ranges for the work we see most often. We give you a firm written quote before we start.

Repair Typical price (CAD) Notes
Ring resize, plain band, ±1 size, 14K/18K gold $60–$120 Sterling silver is less, platinum more
Ring resize, eternity or channel-set $150–$300+ Stones may need to be removed and reset
Single prong rebuild $40–$80 Per prong
Re-tip all prongs on a solitaire $120–$200 Adds material to worn tips
Chain solder repair (single break) $30–$70 Depends on chain weight and metal
Clasp replacement $40–$120 Lobster, spring ring, box clasp
Diamond replacement, small accent stone $60–$200 Plus stone cost
Polish and clean, single ring $25–$50 Free for rings purchased from us
Rhodium replating, single white gold ring $60–$100 Lasts 1–3 years with normal wear

Prices reflect typical Vanhess repair quotes as of April 2026. Complex damage, antique pieces, and rings with multiple issues are priced individually after inspection.

Turnaround times

We do all repairs on site, so your ring never leaves the shop. That matters for two reasons. First, you're not waiting on a third-party trade shop's queue. Second, if something needs follow-up work, we can do it immediately instead of shipping the piece back and forth. Here's what to expect:

Job Typical turnaround
Ring resize, plain band, ±1 size 3–5 business days
Ring resize, complex (eternity, channel-set) 7–10 business days
Single prong rebuild or re-tip 2–4 business days
Chain or clasp repair 2–4 business days
Stone replacement (in-stock stone) 3–7 business days
Stone replacement (sourced stone) 1–2 weeks
Polish and clean Same day or next day
Rhodium replating 3–5 business days

If you have an event coming up — a wedding, an anniversary dinner, a vacation — bring it in early and tell us the deadline. We can usually accommodate rush requests, especially for in-stock work. Don't wait until the day before.

What we won't repair (and why)

A few things we'll politely decline. Mostly because the right outcome isn't a repair, it's a different decision.

  • Costume jewelry with thin plating. The plating burns off when we heat the piece, and you end up with a worse-looking ring than you brought in.
  • Antique pieces where the repair would destroy the value. Some old rings should not be modified — we'll tell you if yours is one of them and recommend an antique specialist instead.
  • Rings sized down by more than three sizes. Aggressive sizing weakens a thin band. We'll usually recommend a remake instead. Same final ring, longer lifespan.
  • "Sentimental value only" pieces with structural damage. If the cost of repair is multiple times the cost of a new piece and the original isn't recoverable to a wearable state, we'll be honest with you about that.

How to get a repair started

Walk in. That's it. You don't need an appointment for repair drop-offs. Bring the piece, ideally in a small bag or box so loose stones don't escape if something falls out on the way. We'll inspect it on the counter, give you a written quote, and call you when it's ready. If you can't make it to the shop, you can also fill out our repair form or call us first to ask questions.

We're at 2929 Barnet Highway, Unit 2424, Coquitlam, in the Coquitlam Centre area. Open Monday to Saturday. The shop is about 15 minutes from Burnaby, 10 minutes from Port Moody, and 5 minutes from the SkyTrain.

Key Takeaways

  • Most simple repairs are done in 3–5 business days. Complex work involving stones takes 7–10.
  • All repairs happen on site at our Coquitlam bench. Your ring never leaves the shop.
  • Every repair gets a firm written quote before we start work. No surprises.
  • We don't repair plated costume jewelry, and we'll be honest if a remake is cheaper than fixing an old piece.
  • Walk-ins are fine for repair drop-offs. No appointment needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to resize a ring in Coquitlam?

At Vanhess Jewellery in Coquitlam, a typical ring resize on a plain 14K or 18K gold band costs $60 to $120 CAD when sizing up or down by one size. Eternity rings and channel-set bands range from $150 to $300+ because the stones may need to be removed and reset. Sterling silver costs less, platinum costs more. We give a firm written quote before any work begins.

How long does a ring resize take?

A simple ring resize on a plain gold band takes 3 to 5 business days at our Coquitlam shop. Complex resizes involving eternity rings, channel-set stones, or significant size changes take 7 to 10 business days because the work is more involved. We do all resizing on site, so your ring never leaves the shop.

Can you fix a ring with a missing diamond?

Yes. If the diamond is lost, we can replace it with a matching stone — we keep common sizes in stock and can source uncommon ones in 1 to 2 weeks. Total turnaround for a stone replacement is typically 3 to 7 days for in-stock stones, plus the cost of the diamond itself. Bring the ring in and we'll inspect the setting to confirm what's needed.

Do I need an appointment for a repair?

No. Walk in any time during business hours, Monday to Saturday. We inspect the piece on the counter, give you a written quote, and call you when the repair is complete. Appointments are only needed for custom design consultations or detailed assessments of high-value antique pieces.

Do you repair jewelry not purchased from Vanhess?

Yes, we repair jewelry from any source — chain stores, other jewellers, online purchases, family heirlooms. The only pieces we decline are thin-plated costume jewelry (the plating burns off during heat work) and antique pieces where modification would destroy collector value, in which case we'll recommend a specialist.

Is Vanhess Jewellery near Burnaby and Port Moody?

Yes. Our Coquitlam shop is approximately 15 minutes from Burnaby, 10 minutes from Port Moody, and 5 minutes from the Coquitlam Central SkyTrain station. The address is 2929 Barnet Highway, Unit 2424, Coquitlam BC. Free parking on site.
