Custom Necklaces & Pendants: Designing One-of-a-Kind Pieces

A custom necklace is one of the most personal pieces of fine jewellery you can own. Unlike ready-made designs, a bespoke pendant or chain is built around your stone choice, your preferred chain length, and the way you actually wear jewellery day to day. This guide covers everything from selecting the right gemstone and metal to choosing clasp types, engraving styles, and layering strategies — so the finished piece feels like it was always yours.

Why Choose a Custom Necklace or Pendant?

A necklace sits in the most visible real estate on the body. Off-the-rack designs compromise on chain length, pendant proportion, and stone selection to suit the widest possible audience. A bespoke necklace reverses that equation: every decision — from metal gauge to bail width to chain finish — is made for you. The result is a piece that lies exactly where you want it, complements your neckline, and holds a stone or motif that carries genuine personal meaning.

Vanhess Tip

Bring a favourite necklace to your consultation. We measure it on-body to determine your ideal chain length and pendant scale — much more accurate than a tape measure alone.

Chain Types & Their Character

The chain is the foundation of any necklace. It determines the piece's visual weight, drape, durability, and how prominently a pendant sits. Here are the most popular chain types we craft at Vanhess, along with their best use cases.

Chain Type Description Durability Best For
Cable Round or oval links connected uniformly — the classic chain Very high Everyday pendants, layering
Box Square links that create a smooth, geometric look High Heavier pendants, modern aesthetic
Curb (Cuban) Flat, interlocking links that lie flat against the skin Very high Statement wear, solo chains, men's pieces
Figaro Alternating short and long links — Italian heritage style High Worn alone, unisex designs
Rolo Round symmetrical links, slightly thicker than cable Very high Charm pendants, children's pieces
Singapore Twisted links creating a rope-like sparkle effect Moderate Delicate layering, light pendants
Wheat (Spiga) Braided pattern of four-strand links Very high Heavy pendants, heirloom pieces
Snake Smooth, tubular appearance with tightly joined rings Moderate (kink-prone) Sleek modern look, omega-style

At Vanhess, we can craft any of these in 14k gold, 18k gold, or platinum. Chain gauge (thickness) is adjustable — we typically recommend 0.8–1.0 mm for delicate layering and 1.2–1.8 mm for solo statement chains or heavy pendants.

Pendant Design Options

The pendant is the centrepiece. Custom pendants fall into several broad categories, each of which can be combined with any chain type above.

Solitaire Stone Pendants

A single gemstone — diamond, sapphire, emerald, or coloured stone — set in a minimal bezel or prong setting. The stone does the talking. This is the most popular custom pendant we make because the design variables (stone shape, setting style, bail orientation) are simple enough to finalise in a single consultation but the result is unmistakably bespoke.

Halo Pendants

A centre stone surrounded by a ring of smaller accent diamonds or gemstones. The halo adds visual size and sparkle without significantly increasing the centre stone's carat weight — a smart strategy when you want impact within a defined budget. We size the halo to maintain proportion: typically the accent ring extends 1–1.5 mm beyond the centre stone on each side.

Monogram & Initial Pendants

Personalised letters in your choice of font, metal, and finish. We can incorporate small diamonds or birthstones into the letterform. Monogram pendants make exceptional gifts because they combine personalisation with fine craftsmanship — a level above mass-produced initial jewellery.

Symbolic & Custom-Motif Pendants

Religious symbols, family crests, cultural motifs, or entirely original designs. These are crafted from your reference image or sketch, refined in CAD rendering, and then cast or hand-fabricated. If you can draw it (or describe it), we can build it.

Locket Pendants

A hinged case that holds a photograph, lock of hair, or engraved message. Modern lockets can be sleek and minimal — far from the Victorian cliché. We build custom lockets in solid gold with secure snap or magnetic closures.

Choosing a Gemstone for Your Pendant

Pendants are lower-impact than rings, so you have more freedom with softer gemstones. That said, certain stones suit pendant wear better than others.

Diamonds

The hardest natural gemstone (10 on the Mohs scale). Ideal for everyday pendants. Round brilliant and oval cuts maximise sparkle; emerald cuts offer a quieter sophistication.

Sapphires

9 on the Mohs scale — nearly as hard as diamonds. Available in blue, pink, yellow, and teal. Exceptional durability for daily-wear pendants.

Emeralds

7.5–8 on the Mohs scale but often contain natural inclusions (called "jardin") that make them more fragile. Set in a protective bezel rather than prongs for pendant wear.

Moissanite

9.25 on the Mohs scale with exceptional brilliance. An increasingly popular alternative to diamonds — nearly identical sparkle at a significantly different price point.

Birthstones

A meaningful personalised choice. Durability varies by stone: garnet (7.5), aquamarine (8), opal (5.5–6.5). We advise on setting style based on the stone's hardness.

Pearls

Soft (2.5–4.5 Mohs) and require gentle handling. Mounted with a drill-and-peg or cup setting rather than prongs. Freshwater and Akoya pearls are the most common for pendants.

Setting Matters

For pendants, we recommend bezel settings for softer stones (emeralds, opals, pearls) because the metal rim protects the stone's edges. Prong settings work beautifully for harder stones (diamonds, sapphires, moissanite) because they allow maximum light to enter the stone for superior brilliance.

Chain Length & How to Choose

Chain length fundamentally changes how a necklace looks and feels. There is no universal "right" length — it depends on your neck size, the necklines you typically wear, and whether you plan to layer.

Length Name Where It Sits Best Necklines
35–38 cm (14–15") Choker Tight around the neck Off-shoulder, strapless, V-neck
40–43 cm (16–17") Princess Just below the collarbone Crew neck, scoop neck — the most versatile length
45–50 cm (18–20") Matinee At or slightly below the collarbone Button-down shirts, blazers, professional wear
55–60 cm (22–24") Opera Mid-chest High necklines, turtlenecks, layering base
75+ cm (30"+) Rope Below the bust or doubled as a choker Versatile — worn long or doubled

Custom chains allow half-inch adjustments. We often build in a 5 cm (2") extension chain so you can adjust on the fly — useful when switching between a crew-neck tee and a deep V-neck dress.

Layering Considerations

Layered necklaces are one of the strongest trends in fine jewellery, but layering only works when the lengths, weights, and metals are coordinated. Here are our guidelines:

  • Stagger lengths by at least 5 cm (2"). Chains at 40 cm, 45 cm, and 50+ cm create clean visual separation. Closer spacing causes tangling.
  • Graduate visual weight. The shortest (highest) chain should be the most delicate; each successive layer can increase in thickness or pendant size.
  • Mix textures, not metals (unless you're intentional about it). A cable chain with a curb chain creates interesting contrast. Mixing yellow gold with white gold works, but keep it to two metals maximum.
  • Use a layering clasp if tangling is a concern. We can build a multi-strand clasp at the back that holds two or three chains at fixed separation.
  • Consider pendants carefully. One pendant in a three-chain stack is elegant; three pendants is visually cluttered unless the pieces are extremely delicate.

Clasp Types

The clasp is often overlooked but profoundly affects wearability. Here is what we offer and when each type is appropriate.

Clasp Type Ease of Use Security Best For
Lobster Claw Good — one-handed with practice Very high Most necklaces; the industry standard
Spring Ring Moderate — small, fiddly on fine chains High Delicate chains, lightweight pendants
Toggle Easy — one-handed Moderate (relies on gravity) Statement pieces, heavier chains
Box/Tab Good — satisfying click High (add safety chain for valuables) Multi-strand, vintage-style pieces
Magnetic Excellent — easiest to use Moderate Arthritis-friendly, lightweight everyday chains
Hook & Eye Moderate Moderate Artisan and handcrafted designs

Important

For high-value pieces (diamond pendants, heirloom necklaces), we always recommend a lobster claw clasp with an integrated safety chain. Magnetic clasps are convenient but not appropriate for precious stone pendants — a strong bump can disengage them.

Engraving & Custom Monograms

Engraving adds a hidden layer of personalisation to any pendant or clasp tag. We offer two engraving methods:

  • Machine engraving — Precise, consistent lettering. Best for dates, coordinates, and block text. Available in multiple font styles.
  • Hand engraving — A master engraver cuts into the metal by hand, creating depth and character that machine engraving cannot replicate. Best for script initials, monograms, and decorative borders.

Popular engraving ideas for custom necklaces include: dates (birthdays, anniversaries), GPS coordinates of a meaningful place, short messages ("Always" or "Forever yours"), initials, and fingerprint engravings — we can digitise a thumbprint and engrave it onto a disc pendant or the back of a setting.

Metal Selection for Necklaces

Your metal choice affects colour, weight, durability, and how the piece ages over time. Here is a practical comparison for necklace applications.

Metal Colour Weight Feel Durability Tarnish Notes
14k Yellow Gold Warm gold Medium Very high None Best all-round choice; 58.5% pure gold
18k Yellow Gold Richer gold Medium-heavy High None 75% pure gold; softer, warmer colour
14k White Gold Silver-white (rhodium plated) Medium Very high None (re-plate every 1–3 years) Rhodium plating wears over time; reveals warm undertone
14k Rose Gold Warm pink Medium Very high None Copper alloy creates pink hue; slightly more durable than yellow
Platinum (PT950) Cool white Heavy Exceptional None Densest precious metal; hypoallergenic; develops a patina
Sterling Silver Bright white Light Moderate Yes — requires maintenance Affordable; best for fashion-forward pieces

What Drives the Cost of a Custom Necklace

Custom necklace pricing depends on several interconnected factors. Understanding them helps you make informed decisions about where to invest.

  • Metal weight — Longer and thicker chains use more precious metal. A 50 cm 18k gold chain weighs significantly more than a 40 cm 14k chain, and gold is priced by weight.
  • Chain complexity — A hand-assembled curb chain requires more labour than a machine-made cable chain of the same weight.
  • Gemstone(s) — Carat weight, quality grade (cut, colour, clarity for diamonds; origin and saturation for coloured stones), and rarity all affect stone cost.
  • Setting style — A halo setting with 20 accent stones is more labour-intensive than a simple bezel solitaire.
  • Design complexity — A custom-motif pendant with hand engraving requires more design time and bench hours than a standard solitaire.
  • Finishing — Polished, matte, hammered, sandblasted, or brushed finishes each require different tooling and time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most custom necklaces take 4–6 weeks from consultation to completion. Complex designs with hand engraving or rare stone sourcing may take up to 8 weeks. We provide a timeline estimate at consultation and keep you updated throughout. See the full timeline breakdown.

Absolutely — and we encourage it. Resetting an inherited diamond or gemstone into a new custom pendant is one of the most meaningful things we do. Bring the old piece to your consultation; we assess the stone's condition, measure it, and design a new setting around it.

The 42–45 cm (16.5–18") range works for most people and most necklines — it sits at or just below the collarbone. We recommend adding a 5 cm extension chain so you can fine-tune the length depending on your outfit.

Yes. Bring your chain to the consultation and we will design the pendant — including bail size and orientation — to sit perfectly on it. We can also assess whether the chain is strong enough to support the intended pendant weight.

Yes. Curb chains, figaro chains, and box chains in heavier gauges are our most popular men's designs. Custom dog-tag pendants, signet-style discs, and religious symbol pendants are also common requests. Everything is crafted in the same solid gold or platinum we use for all fine jewellery.
