What Makes Gold Jewellery Hold Its Value

Five things decide whether a piece keeps a meaningful floor. You can check every one of them before you hand over any money.

Solid construction, karat, gram weight, a clear hallmark and simple design. Those five things decide almost all of the metal floor a piece will hold. Brand, box, and how much you paid decide almost none of it.

Key takeaways

  • Solid beats plated and filled, every time, with no exceptions.
  • Higher karat means more gold per gram.
  • Heavier means more metal, and gold is sold by mass.
  • A hallmark makes the content provable, which matters at resale.
  • Simpler construction means less of the price was labour.

What Vanhess does and does not do

Vanhess is a jewellery shop in Coquitlam, British Columbia. We sell solid gold jewellery. We do not sell bullion, bars, coins or wafers, we do not buy or broker investments, and we are not financial advisors, tax advisors or a bullion dealer. Everything on this page is general information to help you understand how gold is priced and valued. It is not financial, investment or tax advice. Speak to a licensed advisor or an accountant before making a decision about your money.

The five, ranked

The buying checklist, in order of how much each factor matters.
Rank Factor What to do about it
1 Solid, not plated or filled Look for a karat mark with no extra letters such as GF or GP
2 Gram weight Ask for it, and write it down. It is the basis of every valuation
3 Karat 14K or 18K for pieces you intend to keep
4 A clear hallmark Check inside a band or on the clasp before buying
5 Simple construction Plain chains, bands and bangles hold more metal per dollar than intricate work

What does not matter as much as people think

Brand, box, papers and price paid

For a small number of luxury houses there is a genuine secondary market where the name carries value. For everything else, and that is the overwhelming majority of jewellery sold anywhere, a buyer is assessing metal.

The same goes for the original receipt. It tells a buyer what you paid, which is information about the retail market at that time, not about what the piece is worth now.

Worth knowing

If you want one rule: buy the heaviest plain solid piece in the karat you like, at the price you can afford. It will hold more of its value than anything else at the same price, and plain gold does not go out of fashion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does gold jewellery hold its value over time?

The metal in it does, because gold is an element that does not degrade. The design and labour portion of the price does not. So a solid gold piece holds a floor set by its weight and karat, while the premium you paid above that is generally not recoverable.

Is heavier gold jewellery a better buy?

For metal value, yes, because gold is priced by mass. A heavy plain chain holds more recoverable gold than a light intricate piece at the same price. Whether it is a better buy overall depends on whether you will actually wear it.

Do gemstones add to gold jewellery value?

Sometimes, but far less than most people expect. Large, certified, high-quality stones have their own market. Small accent stones usually add nothing at resale, because removing and reselling them costs more than they are worth.
