Custom Engagement Rings: How the Process Works (From Sketch to Finger)
The most common question we hear about custom engagement rings is "how much more does custom cost?" The answer surprises most people: sometimes nothing. A custom ring can cost the same as, or even less than, a comparable off-the-shelf ring because you're choosing every component and cutting out the wholesale distributor markup. What custom always costs more of is time and involvement. You're part of the design process, and you need to show up for it.
Here's how custom ring design works at Vanhess, from first conversation to finished ring.
Step 1: The Consultation (Free, 30 Minutes)
You come in and sit down with us. We talk about what you want: style preferences, stone preferences, metal, budget, and timeline. Bring reference photos if you have them. Pinterest boards, screenshots from Instagram, a photo of your grandmother's ring you loved as a kid. Anything that communicates your taste is useful.
We also talk about the wearer's lifestyle. Someone who works with their hands every day needs a different ring than someone who works at a desk. A bezel setting is more practical for active lifestyles. A cathedral solitaire works for someone who's careful with their hands. We'll ask about allergies (nickel sensitivity affects white gold choice) and daily habits.
By the end of the consultation, we'll have a rough concept and a budget range. There's no charge and no obligation for this meeting.
Step 2: Design and CAD Rendering
Our goldsmith sketches the concept by hand first, then moves to CAD (computer-aided design) if the design warrants it. CAD gives you a 3D rendering of the ring from every angle before any metal is touched. You can rotate it, see how the profile sits, adjust proportions. This is where most of the back-and-forth happens.
Simple designs (solitaires, three-stone, classic halos) may not need CAD. The goldsmith can work from sketches and reference directly to wax. Complex designs (asymmetric settings, unusual stone shapes, mixed metals) benefit from CAD because changes are free in digital space and expensive in gold.
Step 3: Wax Model and Approval
Once the design is finalized, we carve a wax model of the ring. This is a physical prototype you can hold, put on your finger, and evaluate for size, proportion, and feel. The wax model is the last chance to make changes before casting.
We encourage you to come in and try the wax on. Photos don't capture how a ring feels on your hand, how high the setting sits, or whether the shank width is comfortable. If something needs adjusting, it's a quick modification to the wax. Once you approve, we cast.
Step 4: Casting
The wax model is embedded in a plaster-like investment material, then heated in a kiln until the wax burns out, leaving a perfect negative cavity. Molten gold (or platinum) is poured into that cavity through centrifugal or vacuum casting. When the investment is broken away, a rough gold ring emerges in the exact shape of the wax.
This process is called lost-wax casting, and it's been used for over 5,000 years. The basic physics haven't changed. Our tools are more precise, but the principle is identical to ancient goldsmiths.
Step 5: Stone Setting
The cast ring is cleaned up, prongs are shaped, and the stone is set by hand. This is the most skilled part of the process. Setting a diamond into prongs requires applying exactly the right amount of pressure to secure the stone without chipping it. Our goldsmith sets stones on site at Vanhess, which means we control the quality of this step directly.
Step 6: Finishing
Polishing, rhodium plating (for white gold), quality inspection, hallmarking. The ring is checked under a loupe for any casting flaws, setting issues, or surface imperfections. Then it's ready for pickup.
Timeline and Pricing
A typical custom engagement ring takes 4 to 6 weeks from consultation to completion. Rush jobs are possible (2 to 3 weeks) with a surcharge, but we don't recommend them because the design phase gets compressed.
Pricing depends on the stone and metal, not the fact that it's custom. Our making charge for a custom ring starts around $400 to $800 CAD for straightforward designs. The total price of the ring is the making charge plus the stone and metal cost. A custom 14K gold solitaire with a 0.75ct diamond might total $3,000 to $5,000, which is in the same range as comparable off-the-shelf rings from any independent jeweller.
Key Takeaways
- Custom doesn't always mean more expensive. You're choosing every component, which can actually eliminate the markup from wholesale distributors.
- The process takes 4 to 6 weeks. Plan ahead. Don't start 2 weeks before the proposal.
- Come to the consultation with reference photos and a budget range. Both save time and help us design to your actual needs.
- The wax model is the most important step. Try it on before approving the cast.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a custom engagement ring cost?
At Vanhess Jewellery in Coquitlam, our making charge for custom rings starts at $400 to $800 CAD depending on design complexity. Total cost includes the stone and metal. A custom 14K gold solitaire with a GIA-certified diamond typically runs $2,500 to $8,000+ depending on stone size and quality. This is comparable to off-the-shelf rings of similar specifications.
How long does it take to make a custom engagement ring?
Four to six weeks from initial consultation to finished ring. This includes the design phase (1-2 weeks), wax model approval, casting, stone setting, and finishing. Rush orders can be completed in 2-3 weeks with an additional fee.
Can I bring my own diamond for a custom ring?
Yes. We regularly set customer-supplied stones. If you've purchased a diamond online or inherited one, bring it in and we'll design a setting around it. We'll inspect the stone first to verify its condition and confirm it's suitable for the setting style you want.
