Eternity vs Anniversary Bands: Full vs Half, and How to Choose

Vanhess Team·July 05, 2026· Updated July 05, 2026

The choice between an eternity band and an anniversary band really comes down to full versus half: a full eternity band carries gemstones all the way around, while a half-eternity, or anniversary band, sets stones only across the top. At Vanhess Jewellery in Coquitlam, BC, this is the question we get from couples buying a milestone gift or a band to wear next to an engagement ring. Both look beautiful from the front. The differences that matter sit underneath: comfort against the finger, whether the ring can be resized, and how much you pay for those extra stones around the back.

Full eternity bands

A full eternity band has diamonds or gemstones set continuously around the entire circumference. From any angle it sparkles, which is the draw. It also holds the most carats of any band style, so it carries the most stone and the highest price. The trade-off is practical. With stones all the way around there is no plain metal to cut, which means a full eternity band generally cannot be resized. You have to get the size right at purchase. The stones on the underside can also press against the finger and against neighbouring fingers, which some people find less comfortable for all-day wear.

Half-eternity and anniversary bands

A half-eternity band, often sold as an anniversary band, sets stones across roughly the top half of the ring, with plain metal around the bottom. That plain section is what makes the difference. It sits smoothly against the finger, it is more comfortable for daily wear, and because there is solderable metal at the base, it can be resized later. You give up the all-around sparkle, but in normal wear the bottom of a ring is rarely on show anyway. For most people this is the more sensible choice, and it is why we steer a lot of customers toward it.

Side by side

Full eternity vs half-eternity (anniversary) band. General guidance, June 2026.
Full eternity Half-eternity / anniversary
Stone placement All the way around Across the top only
Sparkle from every angle Yes From the top
Total carat weight Higher Lower
Comfort on the finger Stones can press on the underside Smooth plain metal underneath
Can it be resized? Usually no Yes
Relative cost Higher (more stones) Lower

Stacking with a wedding band or engagement ring

A lot of these bands are bought to sit alongside an engagement ring or wedding band. A half-eternity stacks well because the plain underside sits flush against the next ring without stones rubbing metal. Full eternity bands stack beautifully too, but stone-against-stone contact between rings can cause tiny chips over years of wear, so if you stack daily, keep an eye on it. If you are planning a stack from scratch, our guide on how to plan a ring stack goes deeper, and our women's wedding ring collection has both styles to compare.

A word on sizing and the long game

Fingers change over a lifetime. They swell in heat, shift with pregnancy, and slowly change with age. A half-eternity band can follow those changes because our goldsmith can resize it, and you can read how that works in our note on whether a ring can be resized. A full eternity band cannot, so if you buy one, buy it for the size you are confident about and keep a little caution about the years ahead. We always check the fit carefully before a full eternity purchase for exactly this reason. Repairs and resizing on the resizable styles are handled in house, which you can read about on our jewellery repair page.

How to choose

Want maximum sparkle, confident about your size, and not planning to resize? A full eternity band rewards you. Want comfort, flexibility, and a friendlier price, especially as an everyday ring? A half-eternity band is the practical pick. Neither is the "right" answer for everyone. It depends on your hands, your habits, and how you feel about never being able to change the size.

Carat weight and what you are really paying for

The price gap between the two styles is mostly stones, not metal. A full eternity band can easily hold twice the diamonds of a half-eternity in the same width, and since the stones are the bulk of the cost, that roughly doubles the price for the same quality. It also means a full eternity band carries a higher total carat weight, which is part of its appeal if you want presence on the hand. The GIA notes that carat weight is measured precisely and adds up quickly across many small stones, so do not assume "small diamonds" means "small price." Ask for the total carat weight when you compare two bands; it is the fairest way to see what you are paying for.

Stone size matters too. Bands set with slightly larger stones across the top can look like more ring for less money than a full eternity packed with tiny ones, because the eye reads the top of the hand. In our shop we often show both side by side, because the photos online rarely tell you how a band actually sits.

Key Takeaways

  • Full eternity bands set stones all the way around, hold more carats, sparkle from every angle, and usually cannot be resized.
  • Half-eternity (anniversary) bands set stones across the top, sit more comfortably, cost less, and can be resized.
  • Get the size right before buying a full eternity band, because resizing one is rarely practical.
  • Half-eternity bands stack more easily against another ring without stone-on-stone wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an eternity band and an anniversary band?

A full eternity band has gemstones set around its entire circumference, while an anniversary band is usually a half-eternity, with stones across the top half and plain metal underneath. The anniversary band is more comfortable, costs less, and can be resized; the full eternity band carries more stone but usually cannot be resized.

Can a full eternity band be resized?

Usually not. Because stones run all the way around, there is no plain metal to cut and rejoin. Some can be adjusted slightly with sizing beads, but a true resize would mean removing or remaking stones. Buy a full eternity band in the correct size from the start.

Is a full or half eternity band better for daily wear?

A half-eternity band is generally better for daily wear. The plain metal underneath sits smoothly against the finger and against a stacked ring, and the band can be resized as your finger changes over time. Full eternity bands are stunning but less practical for all-day, everyday use.

Which costs more, a full or half eternity band?

A full eternity band costs more because it holds more gemstones, with stones set around the entire ring rather than just the top. The exact difference depends on the carat weight and stone quality, but for the same materials a full eternity will always carry a higher price.
