Necklace Chain Thickness: How Gauge and Weight Affect Strength
Chain thickness is the single number that decides whether a necklace survives being worn or comes back to the bench in two pieces. It gets quoted three different ways: millimetres, gauge, and grams. They measure different things, and only one of them tells you much about strength on its own.
Gauge is a formula, not a list someone made up
Wire gauge looks arbitrary until you see the equation behind it. The American wire gauge, which jewellery suppliers usually call Brown & Sharpe, defines diameter as d = 0.127 mm x 92^((36-n)/39). Every gauge number falls out of that one expression.
Two consequences matter at the counter. The gauge number goes up as the wire gets thinner, which catches people out constantly. And each step is a ratio of about 1.1229, so dropping one gauge number makes the wire roughly 12 percent thicker, not some fixed amount.
The everyday values: 18 gauge is 1.024 mm, 20 gauge is 0.812 mm, 22 gauge is 0.644 mm and 24 gauge is 0.511 mm. Body jewellery uses a different scale entirely, the Birmingham gauge, where 18G is 1.270 mm and 20G is 0.9081 mm. Same number, different millimetres. If someone quotes you a gauge, ask which scale.
Hollow chain is the thing to actually worry about
Here is the number that should change how you shop. Ganoksin's testing found an 18 gauge hollow chain breaks at about 5 lb, roughly 2.27 kg, while the same size solid chain breaks at 30 to 35 lb, about 13.6 to 15.9 kg. Same apparent thickness on the neck. Six to seven times the strength.
Hollow chain exists because gold is sold by weight. Blow air through the middle and a chain looks substantial while costing a fraction. That is a legitimate product, and we sell hollow chain, but you should know which one you are buying, because a hollow rope that catches on a coat zip is finished.
Weight reduction does not scale politely either. Cutting a herringbone chain's weight in half costs it more than half its strength. You lose more than you save.
What thickness buys you in solid chain
In solid rope chain the gain is steep. A 14 gauge rope at 1.8 mm breaks around 15 lb, about 6.8 kg, while a 25 gauge rope at 3.4 mm holds past 60 lb, about 27.2 kg. Not quite double the diameter, four times the load.
Construction matters as much as diameter. Assembled-link chain, the stampato style, breaks between 25 and 60 lb depending on the connecting pins, and can fail as low as 12 lb when the links are weaker than the pins holding them. Omega chain runs 40 to 100 lb. Two chains at the same millimetre reading can sit at opposite ends of that range.
Ganoksin uses 7 to 8 lb, about 3.2 to 3.6 kg, as the dividing line between a strong chain and a weak one. That is a useful benchmark. A chain that fails below it is not built for daily wear no matter how good it looks.
Where chains actually break
Usually not where people expect. The weak point on most necklaces is the jump ring beside the clasp, and there is a reason it is weak: those jump rings are often left unsoldered because of how close they sit to a clasp containing a steel spring. Heat the spring and it loses its temper, so the ring stays open. As that source puts it plainly, if a chain is going to fail, it fails at the jump ring because it is not soldered shut.
That is worth knowing before you blame the chain. A necklace that came apart at the clasp end has usually not broken at all. The jump ring has opened up, and closing and soldering it is a small job. We see this most weeks. Our guide to chain types covers which constructions hold up best.
Grams, gold content, and what you are paying for
Weight is the honest measure of how much gold is present, which is why it drives price. It also connects to what a chain can legally be called. In Canada, quality marks may only go on gold of at least 9K and at most 24K, and the alternative decimal marks are .375 for 9K, .416 for 10K, .583 for 14K, .750 for 18K and .916 for 22K.
Gold filled is a separate category with a real threshold: the gold layer must be at least 10K and make up no less than 1/20 of the gross weight. That is a manufacturing standard, not marketing language. Our piece on vermeil, gold filled and solid gold goes through the differences.
Two chains of the same length and millimetre reading with very different weights are telling you something. The lighter one is hollow, thinner-walled, or lower karat.
How we would pick
For a pendant you wear every day, solid, and thick enough that the chain is not the weak link in the system. A heavy pendant on a fine chain is a repair waiting to happen, because the pendant concentrates load exactly where the chain bends.

For a chain you never take off, we would not go below about 1.5 mm in solid gold, and closer to 2 mm if it carries a pendant. The reason is load concentration rather than the chain itself: a pendant puts repeated stress on one bend point, so the chain has to be thicker than a plain chain worn alone. Solid construction matters more than the millimetre reading. Ganoksin's testing puts a 14 gauge solid rope at about 1.8 mm breaking around 15 lb, which comfortably clears the 7 to 8 lb they treat as the line between a strong and a weak chain. The same nominal size in hollow chain fails far below that. Bring the pendant with you when you choose a chain so the two can be matched as a pair rather than bought separately and hoped for.
Is a hollow gold chain worth buying?
It can be, as long as you know what you are getting. Hollow chain gives you the visual weight of a much thicker chain for a fraction of the gold, which is a real advantage if you want presence without the price. The trade-off is measured, not theoretical: Ganoksin recorded an 18 gauge hollow chain breaking at about 5 lb against 30 to 35 lb for solid at the same gauge. It also cannot usually be repaired well, because there is not enough metal in the wall to take solder cleanly. Our view at the bench is that hollow works for occasional wear and for large statement pieces, and is a poor choice for a chain that holds a pendant or never comes off. Ask before you buy, since the two look nearly identical in the case.
Why did my necklace break at the clasp?
It probably did not break. The jump ring next to the clasp is usually left unsoldered, because the clasp contains a steel spring and heating that spring makes it lose its temper and stop working. That leaves a small open ring as the deliberate weak point in the assembly. Under load it springs open and the chain slides off, which looks like a break but is nothing of the kind. Ganoksin states it directly: if a chain fails, it fails at the jump ring because it is not soldered shut. The fix is quick, and a laser welder can close the ring without cooking the clasp spring. If your chain keeps coming undone at the same end, bring it in rather than replacing the whole necklace.
Does a heavier chain mean better quality?
Weight tells you how much metal is present, which is genuinely useful, but it does not measure how well that metal is used. A heavy chain in a poor construction can still fail early, and Ganoksin's figures show assembled-link chain failing as low as 12 lb even though it feels substantial. What weight does reliably indicate is whether a chain is solid or hollow. Two chains of identical length and millimetre reading with very different weights are not the same product, and the lighter one is hollow, thinner-walled, or a lower karat.
