Why Custom Engagement Rings and Wedding Bands Matter
At the beginning of every love story, there is a moment that changes everything. A moment where two lives become one, and a new journey begins.
An engagement ring is not just a piece of jewellery. It is the first symbol of that journey. And a wedding band is not just a tradition. It is the continuation of that promise.
This is why we believe these pieces should never be ordinary. They should be custom.
A Ring That Begins With Your Story
Every couple has a unique story. Your culture, your memories, your journey, your vision of the future. A custom ring allows you to translate that story into something tangible.
Instead of choosing a ring that already exists, you create something that has never existed before. A design inspired by you.
From the choice of stone to the shape of the band, from the metal to the smallest hidden detail, every element becomes part of your narrative. Because no two love stories are the same, no two rings should be either.
More Than Jewellery — A Symbol of a New Beginning
Starting a life together is like a rebirth. It marks the beginning of a new chapter, a new identity, a shared future.
Your engagement ring becomes the first chapter of that story. Your wedding band becomes the line that continues it, every single day. These are not accessories. They are symbols of transformation, commitment, and connection.
Designed to Last a Lifetime — And Beyond
Your rings will be with you every day. Through milestones, challenges, celebrations, and quiet mornings that nobody photographs.
They are among the only objects you will wear for a lifetime. One day, they may be passed on to the next generation. A custom ring is not made only for today. It is designed to become family jewellery, a piece that carries your story forward.
Something your children, and their children, will one day hold and say: "This is where it all began."
A note on durability, since this matters: the metal you choose determines how the ring holds up. 14K gold is harder than 18K because it has more alloy, which is why we usually recommend 14K for daily-wear engagement rings and wedding bands. Platinum is denser and holds prongs tighter over decades, at a higher cost. We talk all of this through during the design process so the finished ring is not just beautiful but built to stay that way.
The Beauty of Meaningful Design
When a ring is custom-made, every detail has intention.
A hidden engraving inside the band. A gemstone with personal meaning. A silhouette inspired by heritage, nature, or a shared memory. These details may be small. They create something powerful: a piece that is not only beautiful, but deeply personal.
We have clients who asked us to hide the latitude and longitude of where they met, engraved inside the band. Others who matched the band profile to a piece of architecture from their wedding venue. One couple brought in a chip of stone from a hiking trail where they got engaged and asked us to set it alongside the diamond. That kind of meaning is not something you find in a display case.
Your Story, Your Ring
At the end of the day, your engagement ring should not be someone else's idea of love. It should be yours.
A custom design lets you create something that reflects who you are. Not just as individuals, but as a couple. Your story is yours alone, and it deserves to be told beautifully, intentionally, and forever.
How the Custom Process Works at Vanhess
We get asked this often, so here is the short version of how a custom engagement ring or wedding band comes together in our Coquitlam studio.
- Conversation. We sit down, in person or by video, and talk about who the ring is for, what they wear now, what they do with their hands, and what the two of you want this piece to mean.
- Sketch and CAD. Our designer turns the conversation into hand sketches, then a 3D CAD render so you can see the ring from every angle before a single gram of gold is cut.
- Stone selection. We source loose diamonds and coloured stones to your spec. You view them under a loupe, with our goldsmith present, before choosing.
- Wax and casting. The approved CAD becomes a wax model, then a cast in your chosen metal: 14K, 18K, platinum, or a mix.
- Setting and finishing. Stones are set by hand on our bench. Final polish, rhodium plating if it is white gold, and a last fit check on the finger.
- Delivery. From first conversation to finished ring, most custom projects take four to eight weeks depending on complexity and stone availability.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
At Vanhess, most custom engagement rings take four to eight weeks from first conversation to finished piece. Simpler solitaires can be faster. Rings involving rare coloured stones, intricate micro-pave, or complex hand engraving take longer because stone sourcing and bench time stretch out.
Is a custom ring more expensive than buying one off the shelf?
Not necessarily. Because we design and make the ring in-house in Coquitlam, you pay for the actual materials and labour, not a brand markup. For similar quality stones and metal, custom often comes in at or below the retail price of a comparable ring from a chain jeweller. The extra value is that the ring is exactly what you wanted, not a compromise.
Can you match my partner's existing jewellery style?
Yes. Bring in a piece they wear daily, a photo of a ring they like, or even a screenshot from Pinterest. We design from that starting point. Matching the metal colour, stone size, and band width to a style your partner already loves is one of the most reliable ways to make sure the ring feels like them.
What if I have an heirloom stone or old ring I want to reuse?
We reset heirloom stones regularly. An old diamond from a grandmother's engagement ring, a sapphire from a family piece, even melted-down gold from an old wedding band can all be worked into a new design. The sentimental value stays with the stone, the style becomes yours. We wrote about resetting a family heirloom if you want more context on when this works and when it does not.
Do you make matching wedding bands after the engagement ring?
Often, yes. Many couples come back to us for the matching wedding band once the engagement is official, and sometimes a second band for the other partner. Because we keep the original CAD file, we can design a band that fits flush against the engagement ring with no gap, which is one of the main reasons to do both rings with the same studio.
