What anodising is

Anodising is not painting or plating. When titanium is passed through an electric current in a bath, a very thin, clear oxide layer grows on its surface. That layer bends light, and depending on its thickness it reflects a particular colour, the same physics that makes an oil film on water shimmer. Higher voltages grow a thicker layer and shift the colour. The result is a rich colour that is a property of the metal's own surface, not a separate substance sitting on top of it.

Why it is safe and does not wear off

Because the colour is the titanium's oxide surface rather than a coating, there is nothing to flake, peel, or wear through to a base metal. The metal underneath is still nickel-free implant-grade titanium, so an anodised piece is exactly as skin-safe as a plain one. This is the crucial difference from plated jewellery, whose colour is a thin layer over cheaper metal that rubs off and can then cause reactions. Anodised titanium keeps its safety no matter how the colour ages.

How the colour ages

  • Externally threaded posts. Screw threads on the outside of a post drag through the piercing. Choose threadless or internally threaded instead.

What you can safely wear depends on whether the piercing is still healing. For a fresh piercing, keep to the safest materials, implant-grade titanium or solid nickel-free gold, in a smooth threadless or internally threaded fitting, and expect it to be fitted a little long or large to allow for swelling, then downsized by your piercer once that swelling settles.
