Piercing Jewellery Sizing and Gauges
Two numbers decide whether a piece of piercing jewellery fits: the gauge (how thick it is) and the size (post length or ring diameter). Get them right and jewellery sits comfortably and heals well; get them wrong and it moves, snags, or presses. This is the least glamorous part of buying piercing jewellery and the most important. Vanhess sells piercing jewellery in Coquitlam and can measure a piece for you; we do not perform piercings, so see a professional studio for that.
Start here
- Gauge explained, what the numbers mean and why they run backwards
- Length and diameter, how to measure your own jewellery
- Reading a jewellery listing, decoding the numbers when you shop
- Downsizing, swapping to a shorter piece after swelling
- Threadless vs threaded, how the ends attach
