Wedding Band Engraving & Personalisation: Dates, Fingerprints & Hidden Messages
An engraving transforms a wedding band from a beautiful ring into something uniquely yours. Whether it's a meaningful date, your partner's initials, a fingerprint pattern, or a phrase only the two of you understand, the inside of your band becomes a private canvas. Learn about engraving techniques — from traditional hand-engraving to laser precision — and how to choose text, symbols, or artwork that will last as long as your ring.
What Can Be Engraved
Nearly any text, number, or simple design can be engraved inside a wedding band — dates, initials, names, short phrases, coordinates, soundwaves, fingerprints, even small symbols. The limiting factors are the band width (how much interior surface is available) and the engraving method used.
Common Engraving Choices
| Engraving Type | Example | Character Count |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding date | 15.06.2026 or June 15, 2026 | ~10–16 characters |
| Initials | M + S or M♥S | 3–5 characters |
| Short phrase | "Always" / "Forever yours" / "I choose you" | 6–20 characters |
| Coordinates | 49.2827°N, 122.7913°W (where you met) | ~25 characters |
| Split phrase | "I am my beloved's" (hers) + "and my beloved is mine" (his) | ~18 characters each |
| Fingerprint | Each other's fingerprint pattern engraved inside the band | Graphic — requires scan |
| Soundwave | A recording of "I love you" converted to a visual waveform | Graphic — requires audio file |
Engraving Methods
Hand Engraving
A jeweller uses a graver (a small, sharp cutting tool) to physically carve into the metal by hand. Each stroke is unique. Hand engraving produces deeper, more characterful cuts with slight variations that give it a handmade quality. It's the traditional method and the one Mehran uses at Vanhess for most engraving work.
Machine Engraving
A diamond-tipped stylus controlled by a computer etches text into the metal. Produces perfectly uniform characters. More precise for very small text. Less depth than hand engraving — the marks are shallower and may wear down faster over decades.
Laser Engraving
A focused laser beam marks the surface of the metal. The shallowest method — more of a surface marking than a carving. Excellent for very detailed graphics (fingerprints, soundwaves, micro-images). Works on all metals including platinum. The marks are permanent but very subtle — harder to read without magnification.
| Method | Depth | Detail Level | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | Deep | Good for text, monograms, simple motifs | Traditional look. Dates, names, short phrases. |
| Machine | Medium | Excellent for small, uniform text | Long messages, precise fonts, scripts. |
| Laser | Shallow | Exceptional for graphics and micro-detail | Fingerprints, soundwaves, complex images. |
Width Requirements
The inside of the band must be wide enough to hold the engraving legibly. General guidelines:
- 2mm band: Very limited — a short date or 2–3 initials at most.
- 3mm band: A date, short name, or brief phrase (up to ~15 characters).
- 4mm+ band: Full phrases, coordinates, two lines of text. Most flexibility.
- 5mm+ band: Room for graphics — fingerprints, symbols alongside text.
If engraving is important to you, mention it during the band design stage — we'll ensure the band width accommodates your message. It's much easier to plan for this upfront than to fit engraving into a band that's already made too narrow.
