Hand engraving vs machine engraving
There are two ways to put words on a ring, and they suit different jobs.
Hand engraving is the traditional method: a jeweller cuts each letter by hand with a sharp tool called a graver. It is deeper, has real character and slight variation, and a skilled hand can do flourishes a machine cannot. It costs more because it takes time and skill, and it is the choice when you want something that feels crafted.
Machine and laser engraving use a computer-guided tool. It is precise, fast, and more affordable, it offers lots of fonts, and it can reproduce things hand engraving struggles with, such as an actual handwriting sample, a fingerprint, or a tiny image. It is shallower than hand work. For most inside-the-band messages, laser is the practical pick, and for very hard metals like tungsten or titanium it is the only option, because those metals are too hard to hand engrave.

A standard narrow wedding band usually holds a short line, roughly fifteen to thirty characters, which is plenty for a date and initials or a couple of words. A wider band fits more, or two lines. Script fonts are pretty but take more room than a clean block font. A few practical notes

Deep hand engraving is not a good idea on a very thin or delicate band, because it removes metal the band cannot spare. Inside engraving does not wear, since it is protected against your finger, while anything engraved on the outside of a ring will soften over years of contact. And if a ring is resized later, engraving near the seam may need to be re-cut, so tell your jeweller it is there. Give yourself time before a wedding or a gift date, since good engraving is not a same-hour job.
