Why White Gold Turns Yellow, and What Actually Fixes It
White gold is not white. It is gold, which is yellow, mixed with pale metals to lighten it and then plated with rhodium to finish the job. When a white gold ring starts looking warm or dull around the band, nothing has gone wrong. The plating has worn through and you are seeing the actual alloy underneath.
What rhodium is and why it goes on top
Rhodium is element 45, a very rare, hard, corrosion-resistant transition metal in the platinum group. It is 6.0 on the Mohs scale, melts at 1964 degrees C and has a density of 12.423 g/cm3. Hard, bright, and chemically stubborn.
Its job here is optical. Rhodium coatings reflect roughly 73 percent of visible light, and the metal virtually eliminates surface discolouring even under extreme conditions at normal temperatures. That is the bright, cool white people associate with the metal.
Ganoksin puts the reason bluntly: rhodium is used to give a good white colour to white gold jewellery, which is often not a good white colour on its own. The plating is doing real work.
Half a micron, and why it is not thicker
The layer is thinner than most people imagine. Typical deposit thickness on gold jewellery is about 0.5 microns, ranging up to 2 to 3 microns. Umicore's jewellery rhodium electrolyte is specified to deposit layers 0.1 to 0.3 micrometres thick without cracking.
The obvious question is why nobody just plates it thicker. The answer is internal stress. Stress builds in the deposit as thickness increases, and eventually the layer cracks. A thick rhodium coat would craze and flake, which looks far worse than honest wear. The thinness is a deliberate engineering limit.
Here is the irony that explains the wear pattern. The plating is around HV 950, and Umicore quotes approximately 800 to 900 HV. It is much harder than the gold beneath it. It does not wear away because it is soft. It wears away because there is almost nothing of it.
Where it goes first, and why
Always the same places. The underside of a ring shank, where it grinds against the neighbouring finger and every surface you touch. The high points of a setting. The outer curve of a bangle. Anywhere contact is constant.
The backs of earrings and the inside of a pendant bail often look untouched years later, because nothing rubs them. That uneven wear is the tell. A ring that has gone warm underneath and stayed bright on top has not tarnished, since gold does not tarnish that way. It has been abraded in a pattern that matches how you use your hands.
How fast it happens depends on the person. Hand chemistry, occupation, whether you take rings off for the gym or to garden. We have seen plating survive four years on one customer and eight months on another, wearing the same ring model. We can tell you what we see at the bench, but no honest source publishes an average interval, so be wary of anyone who quotes you one.
The nickel problem, and palladium white gold
White gold gets its pale colour from alloying metals: nickel, silver, platinum or palladium. Nickel is cheap and very effective at bleaching gold, which is why it dominated for decades.
Then regulation intervened. The European Nickel Directive limited nickel release from jewellery in prolonged skin contact to less than 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week, and restricted earring posts and body piercing items to under 0.05 percent nickel by weight. A 2004 revision set a release limit of less than 0.2 micrograms per square centimetre per week in artificial sweat for piercing applications.

Your actual options
Replate it. The ring is polished, cleaned and put back through the plating bath. It comes back looking new, and in a year or three you do it again. This is the normal path and most people are happy with it.
Stop replating. Let the alloy show and treat it as a warm white metal. Some people prefer it once they stop expecting bright white, particularly on a ring with a lot of surface area. Nothing is being damaged by leaving it.

One caution. Replating means polishing first, and polishing removes metal. Done every year for decades on an engraved or detailed ring, you will soften the detail. On a plain band it is nothing. On a milgrain edge or hand engraving, we would rather replate less often.

No, and this is the most common worry we hear about it. It is the opposite of a defect: you are seeing the real gold alloy, which was always there under the plating. So the thinness is a designed limit rather than a shop cutting corners. If you want a white metal that never needs this maintenance, the answer is changing metal to platinum or palladium white gold, not asking for heavier plating.
Should I choose palladium white gold instead?
If you have any nickel sensitivity, we think yes, and the regulatory history supports it. The European Nickel Directive capped nickel release from jewellery in prolonged skin contact at under 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week, with much tighter limits for piercing jewellery, and that pressure moved a lot of the trade toward palladium alloys. Palladium white gold is naturally greyer, so it looks acceptable unplated and closer to platinum than to bright plated white. It costs more. If you actively want that very bright cool white, you will still want rhodium on top of it and you are back to periodic replating.
