Chain Repair: When to Solder a Broken Clasp and When to Replace
A broken clasp is usually a cheap fix. A broken herringbone chain usually is not, and the difference has almost nothing to do with how the piece looks when you bring it in. What decides the answer at the bench is the chain's construction, whether solder can be placed without cooking a nearby stone, and whether the repair will leave the piece still honestly stamped for its karat. Here is how a jeweller works through those three questions.
The Clasp Is Rarely the Problem
When a necklace comes off during the day, most people assume the clasp failed. Usually the jump ring did. That small open ring joining the clasp to the chain is the thinnest component in the whole assembly, and it works itself open under a year of tugging. Replacing a jump ring with a heavier soldered one is a quick bench job and normally the cheapest repair we do.
A genuinely failed lobster clasp, where the spring has gone or the gate no longer seats, gets replaced rather than rebuilt. The spring inside is not a serviceable part. If a clasp has failed once at a given size, going up one size is worth doing, because clasp failures cluster on chains where the clasp was undersized for the weight it carries.
Solder: What "Easy, Medium, Hard" Actually Means
Gold solder is itself a gold alloy, formulated to melt below the metal it joins. Ganoksin's technical guide gives the working figures for 14ct cadmium-free gold solders: easy flows at 685 to 728°C, medium at 757 to 774°C, hard at 795 to 807°C. For 18ct the same source gives easy at 726 to 750°C, medium at 765 to 781°C and hard at 797 to 804°C. Silver runs cooler: Cooksongold publishes extra easy at 655 to 710°C, easy at 705 to 725°C, medium at 720 to 765°C and hard at 745 to 780°C.
The principle behind the grades is simple. A solder must have a liquidus at least 20°C below the solidus of the metal being joined, or you melt the piece instead of joining it. The grades exist so a jeweller can make a second and third joint near the first without the earlier work flowing again.
What the grades do not give you is a fixed temperature. Ganoksin makes this point sharply, noting one 18k yellow gold easy solder that flows at 1,255°F/679°C and another that flows at 1,490°F/810°C, a spread of 155°F between two products carrying the same label. Melting point and flow point are different things too, roughly 100 degrees apart, with the metal turning slushy well before it actually runs. This is why a repair is a skill rather than a setting on a dial.
When the Stones Decide the Method
Heat is the enemy of most of what sits in a setting. GIA warns that high heat or sudden temperature changes can cause opal to fracture, that high heat can burn cultured pearls or cause discolouration, splitting or cracking, and that heat can damage emeralds, especially by extending existing fractures. None of those sources gives a safe maximum temperature, because the honest answer is that the damage depends on the individual stone.
That leaves two routes. Either the stone comes out before the torch goes on and gets reset afterwards, which adds setting time to the bill, or the work is done with a laser welder. Laser welding is what changed this category of repair: it lets a jeweller work as close as half a millimetre from heat-sensitive stones without damaging them. On a pendant with an opal or a pearl close to the break, that is often the difference between a straightforward repair and a full rebuild.
The Rule Most People Have Never Heard Of
Solder is not pure gold, so adding it to a piece slightly lowers the overall gold content. Canada regulates exactly how far that is allowed to go. The Precious Metals Marking Regulations, section 13 state that the actual quality of the gold must not fall short of the represented quality by more than seven parts by weight in every 1,000 where solder is used, or three parts in every 1,000 where no solder is used. For white gold marked 18 karat or greater, the soldered tolerance widens to 15 parts per 1,000. The Competition Bureau publishes the same figures.
The practical consequence: a repair done with a solder well below the karat of the piece can push a stamped item outside its legal tolerance. Ganoksin's guidance is that gold solder alloys should be of the same caratage as the jewellery, and regulations in many countries require it. It is also why a cheap repair on a marked 18k ring is worth asking questions about. Ask what karat solder was used.
The United States runs a parallel rule under the National Stamping Act, cited in the FTC Jewelry Guides: gold with no solder has a tolerance of three parts per thousand and seven with solder, while sterling silver allows four without solder and ten with.
The Chains We Will Not Promise to Fix
Some constructions repair well and some do not, and it is worth knowing which you own before it breaks.
- Cable, curb, rope and box: straightforward. Individual links can be opened, replaced and soldered, and a broken section can be rejoined nearly invisibly.
- Figaro and anchor: also straightforward, though matching the link pattern matters cosmetically.
- Herringbone: the difficult one. Working jewellers on the Ganoksin Orchid trade forum describe kinks that keep coming back. One jeweller, Kelley Dragon, writes: "In my shop, we scrap all herringbone chains. Even if you go to the trouble of repair, some OTHER place in the chain will kink." Another, Jeff Demand, says it is possible to twist and burnish it back close to new shape, but "it will do it again." That is practitioner experience rather than a manufacturer specification, and it matches what we see.
- Snake: similar problem. Once the flexible tube kinks, the crease is permanent and the chain tends to fail again beside the repair.

Solder or Replace: How We Decide
Repair when the break is clean, the construction is repairable, and the chain has no other thin spots. Replace when the chain has worn thin along its length, because a single repair on a chain that is failing from age just moves the next break a few links along. We check by running the whole chain slowly through our fingers under magnification, looking for links that have worn to a flat spot. If we find several, we say so.
Cost usually decides the rest. A jump ring or clasp replacement is minor. A full rebuild on a lightweight chain frequently costs more than the chain, and we will tell you that rather than take the work.
