Diamond Rings for Vancouver
Diamond engagement rings, anniversary bands, and fine diamond jewellery — natural and lab-grown, GIA-graded, designed and crafted in our Coquitlam workshop for Vancouver clients.
A diamond ring is not only for getting engaged. At Vanhess Jewellery we make engagement rings, anniversary and eternity bands, right-hand rings worn for yourself, and diamond fashion rings for everyday wear. Every piece is designed and built in our own workshop in Coquitlam, a short trip from downtown Vancouver, by an on-site goldsmith who works through each step in-house rather than sending the job out.
Buying a diamond ring can feel confusing because the price of two rings that look the same can be very different. This page explains what actually drives that price, how to choose between a natural and a lab-grown diamond, how to read a diamond's certificate, and whether a ready-made or custom ring suits you better. We are a member of the Canadian Jewellers Association and have earned over 150 five-star Google reviews from local clients.
Diamond rings for every occasion
Different moments call for different rings, and the right design depends on how and when you plan to wear it. A few of the most common reasons people come to us:
- Engagement rings. Usually a single centre diamond, often with smaller stones along the band. This is the most personal choice and the one most people spend the most time on. Our full engagement ring diamond guide walks through the decisions in order.
- Anniversary and eternity bands. A row of diamonds set around part or all of the band, often given to mark a milestone. Eternity bands look beautiful but can be harder to resize later, so the fit needs to be right from the start.
- Right-hand rings. A diamond ring bought for yourself, with no engagement meaning attached. These are growing in popularity and there are no rules about the shape or setting.
- Diamond fashion rings. Lighter, everyday pieces, sometimes mixing diamonds with other gemstones, made to wear often rather than save for special days.
If you are weighing different diamond outlines, our diamond shapes guide shows how round, oval, emerald, princess and other cuts look and wear differently.
Understanding the 4Cs
Diamond quality is described using four measures known as the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. The Gemological Institute of America created this system, and it is the standard the whole trade uses. Here is what each one means in plain terms:
- Cut. How well the diamond has been shaped and polished so light bounces back to your eye. Cut has the biggest effect on how much a diamond sparkles, so we tend to recommend prioritising it.
- Colour. Most diamonds are graded from D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet as a faint warmth appears. Many people are happy a few grades below the top, where the difference is hard to see once the ring is on the hand.
- Clarity. The presence of tiny natural marks inside or on the diamond. Many of these are invisible without magnification and do not affect how the ring looks day to day.
- Carat. The weight of the diamond, not its size on the finger. A well-cut lighter stone can look larger than a heavier one that is cut poorly.
You do not need to chase the highest grade in every category. We help you balance the four against your budget so your money goes where it shows. Bring your questions to a free consultation and we will show you stones side by side.
Natural or lab-grown
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same chemistry and the same sparkle. The difference is origin: a natural diamond formed in the earth over a very long time, while a lab-grown diamond is made in a controlled facility over weeks. The choice is increasingly common. According to figures reported by Rapaport, citing The Knot's 2024 survey, lab-grown stones made up 52% of engagement ring centre diamonds in 2024.
A simple way to think about it:
- Lab-grown usually costs less for the same size and quality, so it can let you choose a larger or higher-grade stone for the same budget.
- Natural appeals to people who value that the diamond came from the earth and tends to hold value differently over time.
There is no wrong answer. Our lab versus natural comparison goes deeper, and in person we will show you both so you can decide with your own eyes rather than from a description.
Certification & buying with confidence
A diamond certificate, sometimes called a grading report, is an independent assessment of a stone's 4Cs from a respected laboratory. It means you are buying on documented facts rather than a sales pitch. If a diamond is sold with a GIA report, you can confirm the details yourself using the free GIA Report Check tool before you commit.
Many buyers also want to know their diamond was traded responsibly. The Kimberley Process, a government-backed certification scheme, reports that it covers around 99.8% of the global trade in rough diamonds, which is the main system in place to keep conflict diamonds out of the supply chain.
We explain the certificate on every stone we show, point out what the grades mean for your ring, and never pressure you to decide on the spot. As a Canadian Jewellers Association member with an on-site goldsmith, we stand behind the work after you leave the shop, not just at the till.
Custom or ready to wear
Some clients find a ready-made ring they love and want to take it home the same day. Others have a specific picture in mind, an heirloom stone to reset, or simply want something no one else has. Both are easy to do here because the work happens in our own Coquitlam workshop.
If you choose custom, the process is straightforward: we sit down for a free consultation, agree on the design and the diamond, and our goldsmith builds the ring in-house. A custom piece usually takes around four to six weeks from start to finish, depending on the design. You can read more about how this works on our custom engagement rings page.
Because everything is made and serviced on site, future resizing, cleaning and repairs stay with the same team who built the ring.
Diamond ring questions
How far is your workshop from downtown Vancouver?
We are at Coquitlam Centre, 2929 Barnet Highway. From downtown Vancouver it is roughly a 35 to 45 minute drive, or the same ride on the Millennium Line. You can read more on our visit page, or call us on (604) 653-6449 to arrange a time.
Which of the 4Cs matters most for value?
Cut tends to have the biggest effect on how a diamond looks, because it controls the sparkle, so we often suggest prioritising it. Colour, clarity and carat can usually be balanced down a little without a visible difference on the finger, which leaves more of your budget for a strong cut. We will show you stones side by side so you can judge for yourself.
Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond has the same chemical makeup, hardness and sparkle as a natural one. The only difference is where it formed. Lab-grown stones generally cost less for the same size and grade, while natural stones appeal to buyers who value an earth-origin diamond. Both are good choices, and we are happy to show you each.
How long does a custom diamond ring take?
Most custom rings take around four to six weeks from the first consultation to collection, depending on the design and the diamond. Everything is made in-house by our on-site goldsmith in Coquitlam, so we can keep you updated through the build and handle any future resizing or repairs ourselves. The first consultation is free.
