Men's Engagement Rings in Canada: Styles, Stones, Sizes and How to Choose

Men wear engagement rings, and more of them every year ask for one. A men's engagement ring is usually a band of 4 to 6 mm, in gold or platinum, with or without a flush-set stone, worn on the left ring finger. This page covers the styles men choose, how a stone can be set so it survives daily wear, which finger, what it costs to make, and how a men's ring pairs with a partner's ring, whether that partner is a man or a woman.

Do men wear engagement rings?

Yes. In The Knot's 2017 LGBTQ Weddings Study of 821 married or engaged LGBTQ respondents in the United States, 60% of men exchanged engagement rings at the proposal, and 23% of those rings were custom designed. That survey covers men marrying men. Men marrying women also wear engagement rings, as a second ring bought after the proposal or as part of a pair chosen together. In Canada there is no custom that forbids it and no law that mentions it: the Civil Marriage Act of 2005 defines marriage as the lawful union of two persons and says nothing about rings.

The practical difference between a men's engagement ring and a men's wedding band is small. Most men's engagement rings are bands. The engagement ring is the one worn from the proposal; the wedding band is added at the ceremony, on the same finger or the other hand. Some men wear one ring for both, moving it or adding an engraving at the wedding.

Styles men choose

Plain band

A 4 to 6 mm band in yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum, with a polished, brushed or hammered finish. This is the most common men's engagement ring. It works on its own and pairs with any partner's ring in the same metal colour.

Band with a flush-set or bezel-set stone

A single stone set level with the surface of the band (flush) or wrapped in a rim of metal (bezel). The stone sits inside the band's profile, so it does not catch on clothing, tools or gym equipment. Diamonds and blue sapphires are the hardest stones to choose from. A stone of 2 to 3 mm suits a 5 mm band.

Signet ring

A ring with a flat face that can carry initials, a date, a symbol or nothing at all. Signet rings sit wider on the finger than a band and read as a dress ring rather than a wedding ring, which some men prefer for the engagement period. Our signet ring guide covers face shapes and engraving.

Two-tone or inlaid band

A band in one metal with a stripe or inlay of another: yellow gold in white gold, rose gold in platinum. The inlay is a way to carry a partner's ring colour on a man's ring without matching the whole design.

Metals

Gold and platinum can be resized, repaired and re-polished for the life of the ring. 14 karat gold is 58.3% pure gold and the standard for a ring worn every day; 18 karat is 75% gold, softer and deeper in colour. Platinum is heavier and holds a stone setting tightly for decades. Tungsten and titanium bands are cheaper and harder, but they cannot be resized, and a tungsten ring that must come off in an emergency is cracked off rather than cut. Our post on tungsten, titanium and gold bands and our metals guide go deeper. For a ring meant to last a marriage, we make gold and platinum.

Width and fit

Men's bands run from 3 mm to 8 mm. Below 4 mm a band can look like a woman's band on a wide hand; above 6 mm it starts to interfere with the knuckle when the hand closes. 5 mm sits in the middle of that range and suits most hands. A comfort-fit interior (rounded inside) slides over the knuckle more easily than a flat interior and feels lighter on the hand. Our men's bands are listed in sizes 5 to 12, and we make every ring to order in any size, so a size 14 or 15 is a normal order rather than a special one.

Which finger

In Canada the usual place for any engagement ring is the left ring finger, a custom that goes back to the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. At the wedding the band joins it on the same finger, or the engagement ring moves to the right hand. In several Eastern European countries, including Poland and Russia, and in the Eastern Orthodox Church, the wedding ring traditionally goes on the right hand (Wikipedia). Two partners do not need to use the same hand.

What a men's engagement ring costs to make

The price of a men's ring is driven by metal weight more than by stones, because a 5 mm band holds far more gold than a 2 mm band. A plain 14k gold band costs less than a platinum band of the same width, and a stone adds the cost of the stone plus the setting work. In the 2017 Knot study, men in LGBTQ couples spent an average of US$2,226 on an engagement ring, in 2017 American dollars. We quote each ring from the drawing, so you know the price before any metal is cast.

Pairing a men's ring with a partner's ring

Two rings belong together when they share one element. For two men, that is often the same metal and finish in two widths, or the same inlay stripe on two different bands. For a man and a woman, the man's band usually takes the metal colour of the woman's ring, and sometimes the same edge detail (a milgrain edge, a bevel). Our page on matching and coordinating sets lists the methods with examples, and do both partners get an engagement ring covers how couples decide on one ring or two.

Engraving

The inside of a 5 mm band holds a date, two sets of initials or a short phrase of 20 to 30 characters in a plain font. The outside of a signet face holds a monogram or a symbol. A fingerprint can be engraved inside a band from a scan. Engraving is done after the ring is made and sized, so it adds a few days, and engraved pieces cannot be returned.

Stones that survive a man's hands

A man's ring takes more knocks than most, because men's hands are larger and the band is wider, so the stone matters more than it does on a 2 mm band. Diamond is the hardest gemstone, and sapphire, at 9 on the Mohs scale, is the second hardest gem group, according to GIA. GIA describes emerald, opal and tanzanite as gems that are not tough, and advises that a ring set with them be kept for special occasions. The setting matters as much as the stone: a flush-set stone has metal on every side and nothing to catch, while a prong-set stone stands above the band and will snag on a sleeve. For a man who works with his hands, a flush-set diamond or a plain band is the safe choice, and any ring comes off for work around rotating machinery, climbing or heavy lifting.

Proposing to a man: three practical notes

First, the size. A ring he already wears on the ring finger gives his size; a ring from another finger gives a starting point only. If he wears no rings, trace the inside of a ring he owns on paper, or ask a friend to borrow one. Second, the width. Look at his watch strap and his hands: a man who wears a slim watch and nothing else usually prefers 4 mm; a man who wears a heavy watch or a bracelet carries 6 mm without noticing it. Third, the question of two rings. If you are proposing to a man and you want a ring as well, decide whether you will buy both now or choose your own with him afterwards. Both are common; see who proposes for how couples handle two proposals.

How it works at Vanhess

Bring a ring that fits, a photo, or nothing. We measure the finger in the shop, show widths on the hand and draw the ring on screen before anything is made. A custom men's ring takes 5 to 8 weeks from consultation to collection. Shipping is free in Canada on orders over $60, ready-made bands have 30 day returns, and every piece has a 2 year warranty. If the ring is a surprise, a ring the wearer already owns, or a traced outline of one, gives us the size.

Bands men choose as engagement rings

Every band is made to order in any finger size. Any of them can take a flush-set stone or an engraving inside or out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do men wear engagement rings in Canada?

Yes. There is no Canadian custom or law against it; the Civil Marriage Act of 2005 says nothing about rings. In The Knot's 2017 US study of 821 LGBTQ couples, 60% of men exchanged engagement rings at the proposal. Men marrying women wear them too, usually as a band bought after the proposal or chosen together as part of a pair.

What does a men's engagement ring look like?

Most men's engagement rings are bands of 4 to 6 mm in gold or platinum, polished, brushed or hammered, with or without a single flush-set stone of 2 to 3 mm. Signet rings with a flat face and two-tone bands with an inlay stripe are the other common choices. 5 mm sits in the middle of the range and suits most hands.

Can a men's engagement ring have a diamond?

Yes. A flush-set or bezel-set diamond sits level with or inside the band's surface, so it does not catch on clothing or tools. Diamond is the hardest gemstone and sapphire the second hardest gem group, according to GIA, so both suit a ring worn every day, at 2 to 3 mm on a 5 mm band. In the 2017 Knot study, 23% of men's engagement rings were custom designed, which is how most stone-set men's rings are made.

Which finger does a man wear an engagement ring on?

In Canada, the left ring finger, the same finger used for any engagement ring, a custom that goes back to the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. At the wedding the band joins it on the same finger. In Poland, Russia and the Eastern Orthodox Church the wedding ring traditionally goes on the right hand. Two partners do not need to match hands.

How wide should a men's engagement ring be?

4 to 6 mm suits most hands. Below 4 mm a band can look thin on a wide hand; above 6 mm it presses on the knuckle when the hand closes. 5 mm sits in the middle of the range and suits most hands. A comfort-fit interior, rounded on the inside, slides over the knuckle more easily and feels lighter than a flat interior.

What metal is best for a men's engagement ring?

Gold or platinum, because both can be resized, repaired and re-polished for the life of the ring. 14 karat gold is 58.3% pure gold and the standard for daily wear; platinum is heavier and holds stones tightly for decades. Tungsten and titanium cannot be resized, and a tungsten ring is cracked off in an emergency rather than cut.

How much does a men's engagement ring cost?

The price depends on metal weight more than on stones, because a 5 mm band holds far more gold than a 2 mm band. In the 2017 Knot study, men in LGBTQ couples spent an average of US$2,226 on an engagement ring, in 2017 American dollars. At Vanhess each ring is quoted from the drawing, before any metal is cast.

Can a men's engagement ring also be the wedding ring?

Yes. Many men wear one band for both. The ring goes on at the proposal, and at the wedding it is engraved with the date, moved to the other hand and back, or simply kept on. Other men add a second band at the ceremony, on the same finger or the right hand.

What size are men's rings?

Our men's bands are listed in sizes 5 to 12, and every ring is made to order in any size beyond that, so no size is a special order. Hands vary widely, so measure rather than guess. A ring the man already wears, or a traced outline of it on paper, gives the size if the ring is a surprise. When it is no surprise, we measure the finger in the shop.

How do two men's engagement rings go together?

They share one element: the same metal colour and finish in two widths, or the same inlay stripe on two different bands. The rings do not have to be identical and can differ in width by 1 to 2 mm. One ring can carry a flush-set stone while the other is plain. Both are made to order in each partner's size.

Can I engrave a men's engagement ring?

Yes. The inside of a 5 mm band holds a date, two sets of initials or a phrase of 20 to 30 characters. A signet face holds a monogram or symbol on the outside. A fingerprint can be engraved inside the band from a scan. Engraving happens after sizing and adds a few days, and engraved rings cannot be returned.

How long does a custom men's engagement ring take?

A custom men's ring at Vanhess takes 5 to 8 weeks from the first consultation to collection, including the drawing, your approval, casting, finishing and any stone setting. Ready-made bands are faster. If the ring is for a proposal on a set date, start at least two months before it.
