Jewellery for Two Moms: Push Presents, Birthstones and Family Pieces

In a two-mom family, both mothers can receive a push present: the birth mother for carrying the baby, and the other mother for becoming a parent on the same day. Two pieces that pair, such as two pendants with the baby's birthstone, keep it equal. This page also covers soft birthstones, family rings and pendants, engraving and Mother's Day with two moms.

Two moms in Canada

Most same-gender couples raising children in Canada are two women. In the 2021 Census, Statistics Canada reported that among same-gender couples with children, nearly four in five (79%) were couples with two women. The same release found that 39% of same-gender couples with children were stepfamilies, so a family piece may need room for children from an earlier relationship.

In British Columbia, the law can name both mothers as parents. Under section 27 of the BC Family Law Act, when a child is conceived through assisted reproduction, the birth mother is a parent, and so is the person who was married to her, or in a marriage-like relationship with her, when the child was conceived. The exception is proof that the partner did not consent, or withdrew consent, before conception. This is general information. For your own family, speak to a family lawyer.

Jewellery for two moms follows the same idea: two parents, one family. This page covers push presents for both mothers, birthstone pieces for children, family rings and pendants, and Mother's Day.

Push presents for both mothers

A push present is a gift to mark the birth of a child. One common definition assumes a father gives it. Wikipedia describes it as a present a father gives to the mother to mark the birth. In two-mom families, that definition leaves out the mother who did not give birth. A Care.com guide to push presents notes that some mothers buy one for themselves, so the giver can be anyone. It also says there is no reason a push present has to be expensive.

For two moms, think of two gifts with two meanings:

  • For the birth mother: a gift for carrying and delivering the baby, given by her wife.
  • For the other mother: a gift for becoming a parent on the same day. It can come from her wife, from the baby (chosen by her wife), or from family.

Two pieces that pair work well: two pendants with the baby's birthstone, one ring and one pendant with the same stone, or the same engraving on two different pieces. In families where each mother carries a child, the push present can switch each time, so both mothers end up with a piece for each child.

Birthstone pieces for children

A child's birthstone is a simple way to put a child into a piece of jewellery. Our birthstones guide lists the stone for each month and has a page for each one.

Some birthstones are soft. GIA says diamond, the April stone, is the hardest gemstone and gives sapphire, the September stone, a 9 on the Mohs scale. GIA describes emerald, opal and tanzanite as gems that are not tough. GIA also gives pearl a Mohs hardness of 2.5. Moms with a newborn are lifting, washing and changing all day, so softer stones are safer in a pendant or earrings than in a ring.

A baby can arrive before or after the due date, and a birth near the end of a month can change the stone. Choose the design before the birth, and add the stone once the baby has arrived.

Family rings and pendants

A family piece holds a stone for each person. Layouts to consider:

  • A pendant with one stone for each child, in birth order.
  • A ring with each child's stone set in a row across the top.
  • A pendant with both moms' stones in the centre and the children's stones around them.
  • A bar pendant with each child's name and stone.

With two moms, decide whether each mother gets her own piece or you share one design. Two matching pendants with the same children's stones mean both moms carry the whole family. If your family includes stepchildren or children from an earlier relationship, include every child the two of you are raising.

Plan for growth. If you may have more children, choose a design with space for another stone, or a chain that takes extra charms. At Vanhess every custom piece is drawn on screen and quoted from the drawing before any metal is cast, so you can see where a future stone would go. A custom piece takes 5 to 8 weeks from consultation to collection. Our custom necklaces page shows what we make.

Engraving for two moms

Engraving can name both mothers. Ideas:

  • The names your children use for each of you, such as Mama and Mommy, or Mom and Mum.
  • The children's names and birth dates.
  • The baby's birth time and weight.
  • Both moms' initials with the child's initial between them.

We can also take fingerprint scans for engraving. Hand engraving takes a day once a ring is made and sized. Engraved and personalised pieces cannot be returned, so check names and dates before you order. For more ideas, see engraving ideas for two brides.

Mother's Day with two moms

Mother's Day in a two-mom family has two people to celebrate on one day. Families handle it in different ways. In a Nashville Moms post, one two-mom family celebrates one mother in the morning and the other in the afternoon, and the family prefers to spend the day together. One of them said the hardest part is wanting her wife to feel appreciated while sharing the day. Mombian notes that the plural spelling, Mothers' Day, suits families with more than one mother, and that some families celebrate one parent on Mother's Day and another on a different day.

Jewellery ideas for Mother's Day with two moms:

  • Each mother gives the other a gift "from the children", so each mom chooses for the other.
  • Both moms receive the same piece, such as a pendant with the children's birthstones, in each mom's metal.
  • Older children choose a small piece for each mom, with a parent's help.
  • One mom's gift on Mother's Day and the other's on a second day the family chooses.

When a child joins by adoption or surrogacy

When a child joins a two-mom family through adoption or surrogacy, neither mother gave birth. The idea behind a push present still works as an arrival gift: one piece for each mother, given on the day the child comes home. Use the child's birthstone, or engrave the date the child joined the family next to the birth date. If a birth parent or surrogate is part of your child's story, you may also want to give her a small piece with the child's birthstone. For a child who arrives older, the birthstone still works, and the arrival date can become a second date to mark each year with a small gift.

Pieces to pass on

A family piece can be made with a later owner in mind. A pendant with a child's birthstone, worn by one of the moms, can be given to that child when they are grown. If you plan this, choose solid gold or platinum, keep the design simple, and engrave the child's name and birth date on the back. Keep a note with the piece saying who it is for. Every Vanhess piece has a 2 year warranty, and a jeweller can check the clasp and setting before it is handed on.

Ring sizes after a birth

If you are buying a ring for a mother soon after a birth and you are not sure of her size, a pendant, bracelet or earrings avoid the problem. If you do buy a ring, most solid gold, platinum and silver rings can be resized up to two sizes either way. Full eternity bands, tungsten and titanium rings usually cannot be resized. Our article Can a Ring Be Resized? explains the limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the non-birthing mom get a push present too?

The non-birthing mom can get a push present too, since she becomes a parent on the same day. Her gift can come from her wife, from the baby, or from family. Two pieces that pair, such as two pendants with the baby's birthstone, give each mother her own piece for the same child.

What is a good push present for my wife when we are two moms?

A good push present for your wife in a two-mom family is a piece tied to the baby, such as a pendant with the baby's birthstone or an engraved bar with the baby's name and birth date. If you also want a piece for yourself, choose the same design so the two pieces pair. A push present does not need to be expensive.

Should two moms get matching jewellery when the baby is born?

Two moms can get matching jewellery when the baby is born, and matching pieces show that both are the baby's parents. The same pendant with the baby's birthstone, made in each mother's metal, is a simple choice. Another option is one ring and one pendant with the same stone, so each mom wears it her own way.

Should I order birthstone jewellery before the baby is born?

Order the design of birthstone jewellery before the baby is born, but wait to set the stone until after the birth. A baby can arrive before or after the due date, and a birth near the end of a month changes the birthstone. A custom piece at Vanhess takes 5 to 8 weeks, so start the design early.

Can I put my baby's opal or pearl birthstone in a ring?

You can put an opal or pearl birthstone in a ring, but a pendant or earrings will protect it better. GIA describes opal as a gem that is not tough, and gives pearl a Mohs hardness of 2.5. A new mom uses her hands all day, so a soft stone in a ring can chip or scratch. Wear it on special occasions.

How do two moms celebrate Mother's Day?

Two moms celebrate Mother's Day in different ways, and there is no single rule. One family in a Nashville Moms post celebrates one mother in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Some families choose a second day for one mom. With jewellery, each mom can choose a gift for the other from the children.

Is it Mother's Day or Mothers' Day for a family with two moms?

A family with two moms can write either Mother's Day or Mothers' Day. Mombian notes that the plural form, Mothers' Day, suits families with more than one mother, and says there is no one right answer. On an engraved card or gift tag, use the spelling that feels right for your family.

What should a family ring for two moms include?

A family ring for two moms can include one birthstone for each child, and each mom's stone too. Put the children's stones in birth order. Decide whether both moms wear the same ring design or one wears a ring and the other a pendant. Leave space for another stone if you may have more children.

Can we add a stone for a second child later?

You can add a stone for a second child later if the piece is designed with space for it. Tell your jeweller at the start that more children are possible. At Vanhess every custom piece is drawn on screen before any metal is cast, so you can see where a future stone would sit before you order.

Are both moms legal parents in BC?

Both moms can be legal parents in BC. Under section 27 of the BC Family Law Act, when a child is conceived through assisted reproduction, the birth mother and the person married to her, or in a marriage-like relationship with her, at conception are both parents, unless that partner did not consent or withdrew consent before conception. Ask a family lawyer about your own case.

What can kids give each of their two moms?

Kids can give each of their two moms a small piece of jewellery chosen with the other mom's help, such as a pendant with their birthstone or their initial. Young children can help choose the stone or draw a shape to engrave. Older children can choose on their own. Giving each mom the same type of gift keeps it fair.

What should we engrave on a pendant for two moms?

A pendant for two moms can be engraved with the names the children use for each mother, such as Mama and Mommy, with the children's names or birth dates. Another idea is both moms' initials with the child's initial in the middle. Keep the text short, because a pendant has a small surface.
