Milgrain, Filigree and Hand Engraving: Decorative Metalwork Explained
Two rings can hold the same stone in the same metal and sell for very different money, and the gap is usually in the metalwork you have to lean in to see. Milgrain, filigree and hand engraving are the three decorative techniques that show up most often on jewellery brought into our Coquitlam bench, and they are the three most often confused with each other. This is what each one actually is, how it is made, and what it means for wear and repair.
Milgrain: The Row of Tiny Beads
Milgrain is the line of minute beads running along an edge, a bezel, or the border of a band. The name comes from the French for a thousand grains. It is made by running a small knurling wheel along the metal under pressure, which rolls the beaded texture into the surface rather than adding anything to it.
Sotheby's places the technique squarely in the Edwardian period, noting that Edwardian jewellery featured filigree work, millegrain details and lace-like patterns alongside lighter motifs such as bows, garlands and flowers. That era is also when platinum arrived properly in jewellery. Sotheby's credits Cartier with pioneering platinum and creating the white-on-white look, where diamonds mounted on an invisible platinum setting appeared to float. Milgrain and platinum suit each other because platinum holds a crisp fine bead where softer metals round off.
Milgrain wears. That is worth knowing before you buy a ring covered in it. The beading sits proud of the surface, so it takes the abrasion first, and over years of daily wear the definition softens or flattens in the spots that catch most. It can be restored: a jeweller re-impresses the bead pattern along the original lines with a knurling wheel, as one restoration specialist describes. Treat that as a working jeweller's account rather than a trade standard, because there is no published specification for how often it can be done.
Filigree: Wire Turned Into Lace
Filigree is the openwork you see between the shoulders of an antique-style ring. The V&A describes it as painstaking work involving twisting metal wire into intricate openwork patterns which are either attached to a metal support, or constructed solidly enough to be self-supporting.
That last clause is the important distinction. Filigree backed by a solid plate is decoration on a structure. Self-supporting filigree is the structure, and it is far more fragile. On an old ring, a filigree gallery that has lost a wire is not cosmetic damage, it is a load path gone, and the piece will keep failing beside the repair until the section is rebuilt properly.
Filigree's close relative is granulation, which the V&A defines as fusing tiny grains of gold or other metals to an object to enhance the decorative scheme, historically associated with Etruscan jewellers from between 700 and 400 BCE. The museum's own collection holds an Etruscan bag-shaped earring dated 550 to 450 BC combining filigree and granulation, which is a useful reminder that this is not a modern styling trick. The techniques are roughly two and a half thousand years old.
Hand Engraving, and How to Spot It
Engraving, in the V&A's definition, is incising fine lines, cross-hatching and lettering onto a metal surface to create patterns, images or texts. Hand engraving means a graver, a small chisel-like tool, pushed through the metal by the engraver, cutting a chip out as it goes.
The version worth knowing by name is bright-cut. The V&A describes it as engraving where sharp, angled gravers nick triangular-section dents into the surface to create a bright, reflective surface that catches the light, and notes it was particularly popular in the late 18th century. Bright-cut work throws light in a way no machine reproduces, because each facet is cut at a slightly different angle by hand.
That is also how you tell the three apart. Hand engraving cuts a V-shaped groove with a bright, burnished floor and tiny variations from cut to cut. Machine engraving uses a computer-controlled rotating cutter, which leaves a uniform rounded groove with identical repeats. The Related Techniques You Will See on Older Pieces
- Repoussé: the V&A explains it is carried out from the reverse to create areas of high relief and from the front to sink areas of low relief.
- Chasing: using fine tools of varying sizes to lightly hammer and press a metal surface to add intricate detail. Chasing pushes metal around; engraving removes it. That is the whole difference, and it is why a chased piece has no chip cut out of it.
- Granulation: fused grains, as above, and extremely difficult to do well.
What This Means for Buying and for Repair
Decorated metalwork is where the labour cost of a ring sits. A plain band and a milgrained, filigreed band in the same karat and weight carry very different bench hours, and that is the honest reason for the price gap when the stones match.
For wear, the ranking is straightforward. Deep hand engraving in a heavier band lasts longest, because there is metal underneath it. Milgrain softens first. Self-supporting filigree is the most vulnerable of the three, and it does not belong on a hand that works with tools or lifts weights.
